Page 14 THE BATTALION THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 20, 1979 Battalion photo by Pat O’Malley The Big ‘Green Monster goes Bear hunting Texas A&M defensive end Jacob Green crashes down on Baylor quarterback Mickey Elam in last Saturday’s loss to the Bears. Green’s Bear hunt was successful as he led the Aggie defense with 22 tackles (11 unassisted and 11 assisted) and had four tackles behind the line of scrimmage. The Aggies travel to Penn State to take on the sixth- ranked Nittany Lions Saturday. Pretty stiffs penalty^ Clippers get clipped United Press International PORTLAND, Ore. — The Port land Trail Blazers, with NBA Com missioner Lawrence O’Brien’s com pensation of three veteran players from San Diego for Bill Walton, suddenly have more talent than they know what to do with. However, some of it must go with the addition of rebounding forward Kermit Washington, backup center Kevin Kunnert and possibly veteran guard Randy Smith, at 30 still one of the quickest front-court men in pro basketball. O Brien left San Diego with an option to keep Smith, but if the Clippers do they’ll have to give Portland $350,000 and a first-round choice in the 1982 college draft. Clipper owner Irv Levin has until 5 p.m. today to decide whether to part with his guard, or his money and the draft choice. Walton called the decision “a real setback, and a pretty stiff penalty for an organization that’s trying to bet ter itself.” In addition to the three players, O’Brien also gave Portland a first- round pick in next year’s draft. “Were delighted to acquire Washington, Kunnert and possibly Smith,’’ said Portland’s principal owner Larry Weinberg, “but we are disappointed the commissioner did not include more future draft choices.” The award was the most complex compensation decision in NBA his tory. And O’Brien got help from former Kansas City President and General Manager Joe Alexson in making it. Both agreed “Walton has such talent that his abilities are equaled by no more than one cur rently active center (Kareem Abdul-Jabbar) and perhaps a hand ful of all centers who ever have played in the NBA.” The commissioner cited the 1975 trade that sent Abdul-Jabbar to Los Angeles as a precedent. The Lakers sent four players and more than $1 million to the Bucks for Abdul- Jabbar, and the award to Portland would have been as high if Walton were positively healthy. Walton played only 209 games, or 51 percent of the schedule, in five years at Portland. “If Walton in his first five years had proven as durable as Wilt Chamberlain, Bill Russell or Abdul-Jabbar, it would be virtually impossible to calculate his value or to compensate Portland for his loss,” O’Brien said. Weinberg and Coach Jack Ram say agreed with that, and still say there is no way Portland will ever be completely compensated for the loss of Walton. Walton, however, disagreed. “Obviously, he (the commis sioner) didn’t consider past in juries,” said Walton from San Di ego. “One of the reasons I left Port land was because I felt I was treated poorly, and now all of a sudden they get three quality players back. I’m not discouraged, but I’m down. We re going to have a real good team, but it’s just going to take a little bit longer. The toughest thing is I just hate to see somebody forced into doing something they really don’t want to do, and none of them wanted to leave San Diego.” Ramsay says Washington is going to be a “permanent fixture with Portland, not a man to be traded. Kunnert is going to help our club too. I like Randy, and coached him at Buffalo, but the guard position is where we are strong. However, I’d rather have Smith than the money. ” The Portland roster now totals 18 players, not counting Smith. When the agreement between the NBA governors and Players’ Association restores rosters to 12 players — from 11 at present — the Blazers will have a lot of players to unload by the start of the season. Astros lose. Rangers win United Press International HOUSTON — Glenn Hubbard, a last-minute addition to the lineup, hit a three-run homer to highlight a five-run third inning Wednesday night that carried the Atlanta Braves to a 6-5 victory over the Houston Astros. The Braves trailed 2-0 when Joe Nolan reached first on Enos Cabell’s error and moved to third on Darrel Chaney’s double. Ed Miller then singled Nolan home and Hubbard followed with his third home run to give the Braves a 4-2 lead. Bob Horner chased starter Vern Ruble, 2-4, when he hit two-out solo homer, his 29th, for the final run of the inning. In Oakland, Buddy Bell drove in three runs and Mickey Rivers knocked in two, leading the Texas Rangers to a 9-4 triumph over the Oakland A s for a sweep of their three-game series. Bell and Bump Wills each had four hits to pace a 17-hit attack against three pitchers. The Rangers trailed 3-0 but sent 12 batters to the plate in the third inning and broke the game open with a six-run bar rage. Winner Doyle Alexander, 5-7, al lowed the A s six hits and three walks in 6 1-3 innings before being replaced by Jim Kern, who went the rest of the way. The A s took a 3-0 lead in the sec ond on a two-run double by Rob Picciolo and a sin;le by Rickey Hen derson, but the Rangers chased loser Brian Kingman, 7-6, in the third with Rivers’ two-run single tying the score and Bell’s RBI single giving Texas the lead. Bell added a two-run single in the eighth in raising his batting average to .301.
