The suit was the second filed as an answer to the federal court motion of SEDCO, a Dallas-based drilling company, to limit its liability in the oilspill to $300,000. A lawyer representing Texas shrimp, oyster and crab harvesters last week filed a $155 million suit against the same defendants — SEDCO; PEMEX, the Mexican na tional oil monopoly; and Pemargo, a private drilling contractor that leased the rig Ixtoc I from SEDCO and in turn subleased it to PEMEX. Spokesmen for South Padre Is land, the tourist community at the tip of the 113-mile long strip of white sand off the Texas coast, said the Gulf of Mexico disaster had dealt a severe blow to its residents and businesses. Spokesmen for the Hilton Sea Is land hotel said it stood to lose $1 million as a result of the drop in tourism on the island. The Port Mansfield Utility Dis trict and other political subdivisons in Cameron and Willacy counties said they lost tax revenues. SEDCO last week told U.S. Dis trict Judge Robert O’Conor it should be absolved of blame in the June 3 accident and, in lieu of that, be limited to $300,000 in liability for damages. SEDCO was founded by Gov. William P. Clements, who has placed his business interests in a trust. The company is operated by his son, Gil. SEDCO has admitted receiving about $20 million in an insurance settlement because of damages suf fered by the rig in the blowout. The rig later was sunk in 15,000 feet of water, according to a SEDCO lawyer. Fisher earlier this summer said his court would not adhere to Presi dent Carter’s plan to save energy by raising thermostats in public build ings to 78 degrees. For this trial he instituted a dress code for reporters and last week said at one point they could not listen to testimony and if they did, they could not report it. The reporters present at the time walked out of the courtroom. The alleged prejudical testimony was an account by Robert Hamm, 34, of negotiations to buy the shrimp boat “Monkey” which the government claims was used for two years to smuggle marijuana into the United States from South America. Hamm originally was one of the 22 persons from Texas, Louisiana, Florida and Tennessee indicted in the case. Sixteen are on trial, two were never caught, one has been dismissed and three are testifying for the government. A 27-count indictment alleges the defendants smuggled 127,000 pounds of marijuana into Port Ar thur, Orange and High Island, Texas during a two-year period. Atheist files suit to prevent mass United Press International AUSTIN — Atheist Madalyn Murray O’Hair and her son have filed suit to prevent Pope John Paul II from saying mass on Washington Mall during his upcoming visit to the United States. O’Hair and Jon Garth Murray filed separate suits against “Karol Wojtyla, alias John Paul II, a.k.a. the Pope of Rome” and against the Secretary of the Interior and U.S. Parks Service to prevent the use of the park land between the Capitol and Washington Monument for the Roman Catholic mass. The two said the suits were mailed last week to a U.S. District Court in Washington and will seek a permanent injunction against the conduct of any mass on publicly owned land. Apparently as part of what O’Hair called a more aggressive atheist campaign in the U.S., she called the pope a vicious and unprincipled man and said he should be brought before the United Nations on charges of crimes against women. She contended John Paul II’s visit to this country is timed to enhance the intended presidential candidacy of Sen. Edward Ken nedy, D-Mass., and encourage passage of an amendment to the U.S. Constitution prohibiting abortions. “When the pope comes here to destroy the constitution of the United States with that right-to-life stuff, I think he should be stop ped,” O’Hair told a news conference at the American Atheist Center. “If no one else has the balls to do it, then I will. I think he is a vicious and unprincipled man, and I have no respect for the pope at any level.” She sharply criticized the pope’s statements on abortion, women and birth control and said she and her son would lead the protest march in Chicago. “I feel Pope John Paul II is one of the most repressive persons to appear on the scene in 50 years. He has said the place of women is in the home and in the kitchen and pregnant. He has made some very strong statements against abortion and birth control. He has put women back in a position of servitude throughout the world. ” O’Hair also lashed out sharply at Roman Catholic services. “It’s time somebody said something about the mass. It’s stupid, it’s archaic,” she said. “It’s time for all people to abandon this kind of reliance on this mystical ceremony. “I’m absolutely stunned that we have people who drink the wine and eat the wafer. I have nothing but intellectual contempt for any body who engages in it.” Murray and O’Hair contend the pope’s saying of mass on Washing ton Mall would violate constitutional principles of separation of church and state. “We feel the pope’s visit does not have a secular purpose, that it does foster government entanglement in religion, and that the pope’s visit does have a purpose of advancing not only religion, but the Roman Catholic religion specifically,” Murray said. yping. College 823-8051| ALLEN Oldsmobile Cadillac Honda SALES - SERVICE “Where satisfaction is standard equipment” 2401 Texas Ave. 779-3516 United Press International LOS IN DIOS — If Col. Herbert Williams’ dream is realized, his 200-acre island in the Rio Grande will be a plush gambler’s paradise subject only to Cherokee Indian rules, and a haven for individuals and corporations believing them selves oppressed by U.S. laws and taxes. Williams, as he has been doing for the past year, predicts it will not be long until he and nine partners de clare the island — separated from the U.S. mainland by Hurricane Beulah in 1967 — a sovereign na tion. The group, which Williams said King of the Gypsies” Mike already has declared the is- dependence from the United States and Mexico and said any disputes over its sovereignty ought to be decided by the World Court or International Court of Jus tice. To be known as Cherokee Nation, the approximately 150 city blocks of land might be crowded if all Williams’ plans came to fruition, be cause it would include a radio sta tion, a university and hospital oper ated by doctors fed up with federal regulations, an aircraft factory with non-union labor, a pari-mutuel dog race track, and headquarters for international banks and insurance companies seeking loopholes in U.S. tax laws. He said it also could compete with Panama and Liberia as a registry for ships. Williams, 69, a native of Kenedy, Texas, who is a retired Air Force of ficer and is part Cherokee, said the Lord intended for him to guide for mation of the nation, to be con nected to Texas by a pontoon bridge. Few officials hereabouts believe Williams’ intention of creating a sov ereign nation will ever come about, although he claims that he has bat tled for years in Mexican courts to force the Mexican government to give up any claims to the island. Bob Ybarra, secretary of the U.S. Section of the International Bound ary and Water Commission in El Paso, says as far as that federal agency is concerned the island is part of Mexico, although Williams owns the land.
