Mon.-Thurs. only. United Press International TULSA, Okla. — One of the rea sons for Cities Service Co.’s 90 per cent increase in profits is the federal government’s decision to allow higher gasoline prices, company of ficials said Wednesday. Robert V. Sellers, chairman and chief executive officer, said Wed nesday the Tulsa-headquartered company earned $76.7 million for the second quarter of 1979, up from the $40.4 million earned during the second quarter of 1978. Cities Service markets most of its petroleum products on the East Coast under the Citgo name and is ranked 16th or 17th among the top 20 domestic oil companies, said company spokesman Kent Young. Young said one of the primary reasons for the increased profit was the relaxation of federal price con trols on petroleum products and the resulting higher gasoline prices. Sellers said even without the “enactment of a so-called windfall profits tax the federal government “was one of the largest benefactors of Cities Service’s financial results” because of the excise tax paid on the higher gasoline prices. The Battalion Classifieds 1 Pirates roaming the Illinois Rive\ no Bluebeards United Press International TAHLEQUAH, Okla. — They may not act like brazei swashbucklers of the high seas, but river pirates along the River’s curving banks are causing concern among local businessw and law enforcement officers. Archie Peyton, operator of the largest of several canoe rentalhsr nesses along the Illinois River, is warning his patrons to bewaref men lurking along the river’s edge. He says the pirates scurry along the river bank, scuttle a canoeatl then dive for belongings lost in the river’s depths. "They put a log out over the river, then wait for canoes to hit it tip over, Pey ton said. "Then they dive for what fell out of tit canoes. He said the pirates are selective in choosing a location towayl^ tourists floating down the generally slow-moving river Peyton said pirates favorite spots appear to be deeper, swiftj moving sections of the river where inexperienced paddlists arehetf ant to dive for their belongings. Bruce Olson, a ranger assigned to patrol the river, says therehavt been at least three pirating incidents along the Illinois River in recet weeks and the bandits are “using discretion on who they toppleovei They are picking on the helpless." He said there are just three rangers to patrol the Illinois Riverani that’s not enough to prevent pirating. Olson said he considers the pirates fair game for all law enforce ment agencies in Cherokee County. Tree years ago, according to one canoe rental operator, piratfc became so bad on the river that a crew of vigilantes was senttocb the pirates out of their hidden lairs. They apparently succeeded in breaking up pirate gangs, but not from stopping others from joining the centuries-old profession tacking water craft. r< WAS mat ion White Civil' friendly The i crackin; Civil policy ( “Itg totally 1 Civil exacted Thur “Yes, Thur Edwan Laxal ney gei On t membe Bell Civilett is a mai But I track re Civil said in < indictnn Outsi Shields at- loll or 1 IN HOUSE SPECIAL!
