(At a news conference, Vance also proposed that the Organization of American States call for a cease-fire in Nicaragua and for an end to the supply of foreign arms to both Somoza’s National Guard and the leftist Sandinista guerrillas.) About 80 American dependents drove in a 17-car convoy from the U.S. ambassador’s residence to Somoza’s Pacific coast Montelimar Airport, where they boarded the C-130 Hercules turboprop transport for the flight to Howard Air Force Base in the Panama Canal Zone.
