DC-3 crashes United Press International FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — A DC-3 cargo plane believed carry ing three persons crashed in flames Tuesday in a small, grassy field within a few feet of Interstate 95, which was jammed with rush hour traffic. There were no survivors found in the wreckage, but no one on the ground was hurt in the spectacular explosion and fire. “It’s a wonder it didn’t kill some body else — all those people on 1-95. It was awful. Oh my God, it was terrible,” said Richard Smalley , who watched the plane nose dive and crash as he drove along Cypress Creek Road. Officials at nearby Fort Lauder dale executive airport said the plane I was taking off when it crashed from an altitude of about 1,000 feet. “The only transmission from the pilot was normal traffic involved in taking off,” said a controller at the airport control tower. “That’s the last I heard. I saw it take off, veer to the left and crash.” Smalley, 52, said he was return ing home from taking his wife to work when he saw the plane. “It was about 1,000 feet over 1-95 at the time I spotted it. Then it sud denly swerved to the left and dived into the ground,” Smalley said. “It actually blew up when it hit. It must have had a full tank of gas.” Cheryl Florentine, a nurse who lives near the site of the crash, said “The plane was burning and I couldn’t get near it. The emergency vehicles arrived soon after but they couldn’t get near it right away.” THE BATTALION WEDNESDAY, JUNE 13, 1979 Page 3 ALLEN i;) H • aTm Ring Diamonds , % Oldsmobile • Seiko Watches • 14 Kt. In January 1974, Mrs. Talmadge said she dipped into the overcoat after she had an angry confrontation with Talmadge and his two top aides. “I went home and reached for the usual source of cash,” she said in a soft southern accent. “It was not there — in the hall closet. I found it in the guest room closet. I took at least a third of it (the cash that was in the overcoat at the time).” Under questioning by committee special counsel Carl Eardley, Mrs. Talmadge said “I did not count it” but estimated she took ”$12,000 or $15,000.” Then, Eardley put a cellophane packet containing 77 $100 bills be fore her, and Mrs. Talmadge iden tified them as the money she had turned over to committee inves tigators earlier this year. Mrs. Talmadge said the overcoat had been her source of cash “long before 1973” when Talmadge is ac cused of conspiring with his former top aide, Daniel Minchew, to open a secret bank account that would be used to launder $34,000 in false Se nate expense checks. rate re- I by its Coach model trucks during oplight lal may tuating prema- r brake itrol, if ledal is It.
