SPONSORED BY GAY STUDENT SERVICES what’s up Thursday Fiberglass instead of metal or wooden poles along the roadside could mean a double benefit for the traveling public. Safer fiberglass poles are available at one-third the cost of aluminum. Texas Transportation Institute tests at Texas A&M University show the non-metal pole to be safer and are paving the way for its future use. A car test crashed into a fiberglass pole came away with only fiberglass shards on the bumper. “There was no damage to the car,” commented Thomas M. New ton, TTI research engineer. “If I had to hit one, I’d rather crash into this pole than anything I’ve seen.” Three of the poles have been bro ken by TTI engineers in tests for Al berti International Inc., a Chicago- based company with American manufacturing rights to the pole de veloped in Italy. More tests are planned. Such research is “old hat” to Texas A&M engineers. Institute personnel conceived and developed breakaway sign supports here, along with other highway devices that les sen the force of accident impacts, saving lives and property. “Alberti is still modifying and de veloping the fiberglass pole,” com mented Newton. Concrete socket installation will be tested on the Texas A&M Research and Extension Center test track. In the first test, the fiberglass pole was set in concrete. A “stub” of fibers was left after the test. It did no damage to the underside of the Chevrolet Vega used in the test. “But to replace the pole would re quire digging up the entire concrete footing,” Newton noted. Mounting of fiberglass poles thus will require revision of practices currently employed by agencies that fix such standards. Because of the fiberglass pole’s light wieght, other possibilities oc cur. Wood and metal poles that support power and telephone lines can be rigged to detach from the lines if the pole is broken loose at the ground. “It may be possible to have the lighter weight fiberglass pole sup ported by the lines in case of break age,” the engineer said, “it presents a whole new set of possibilities. But because the fiberglass pole’s charac teristics are different, more research will be needed.” MOVIE: “A Clockwork Orange,” starring Malcolm McDowel, will!*! shown at 8:45 p.m. (R) at The Grove. Tests have so far concentrated on change of momentum of the vehicle, Newton said. The 2,250-pound car used in the first test impacted the pole at 20 mph. Forces measured by accelerometers in the car enable calculation of possible injury to human occupants. Data obtained can be inserted into a formula that allows the en gineers to predict what happens to the same structure and vehicle at 60 mph. The crash test involved a free standing tapered fiberglass pole 7 inches in diameter at the base that mounted a light 30 feet high. The 167-pound structure included an 85-pound pole, 55-pound dummy light and 27-pound support arm. 15-cent stamp may be hi less than a nickel by 1981 United Press International ST. LOUIS — The U.S. Pr Postal Service probably will raise the price of the 15-cent stamp by “well under a nickel” in the spring of 1981, Postmaster General William F. Bolger said Tuesday.
