Peel, new director of planning, design and construc- ! tion for the Texas A&M Univer sity System, has been awarded ' the professional degree in civil 1 engineering. It was given at the University of Missouri at Rolla during the 106th commencement. The de gree recognizes outstanding con tributions to the engineering profession. Army Maj. Gen. Peel received a bachelor’s degree in civil engi neering at the Missouri institu tion in 1958. He was awarded a bachelor’s degree in agricultural education at Texas A&M in 1946. The Texas A&M official until recently was commanding gen eral of the U.S. Army Engineer [Training center at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo. The military veteran held the post almost a year, until assuming the Texas A&M post May 15. A registered professional en gineer in Texas, Gen. Peel dur ing 30 years military service commanded an engineer group and battalion and was operations chief of a brigade in Vietnam. He also served in Korea and the Pacific. Galloway to fill term on hoard Retired oil executive James H. Galloway of Houston has been | named to fill the unexpired term of DeKalb businessman Norman N. Moser on the board of con sultants for Texas A&M Univer sity’s free enterprise center. Galloway, already a board member, agreed to fill out Moser’s term so that new appoin tee Thomas R. “Bob” Frymire of Dallas could have a full five-year term. Frymire was initially seen as filling Moser’s time on the consultant board consisting of five businessmen, five Texas A&M deans and the president of the Former Students Associa tion. Moser, originally named for a two-year term on the board of consultants to the Center for Education and Free Enterprise — a non-profit, privately-funded effort headquartered on the exas A&M campus — relin quished his post earlier this year to accept a post with the Texas A&M University System Board of Regents. In other business, the consult- I ants, meeting for the first time with newly named center direc- , tor Gene C. Uselton, heard re ports on the organizations’s past , activities and future plans for pros and fundraising. Also discussed was the prop- soed 1979-80 free enterprise cen ter budget of $555,678, a 60 per cent higher request than the cur rent budget. Largest increase, more than double, would be in $314,800 earmarked for educa tion, research and publication programs. The board voted to meet Aug. 29 at Texas A&M. Two department heads named New department heads have been named for the geology and biology programs at Texas A&M University. Dr. Robert Stanton Jr. was named to head geology, succeed ing Dr. David Stearns, depart ment head since 1972. Stearns is returning to fulltime teaching and research. Dr. William Klemm has been appointed interim head of biol ogy, succeeding Dr. John Seed who had held the position since 1974 and now seeks to return to fulltime teaching and research. Klemm, a full professor with degrees from Auburn and Notre Dame, has been a faculty member since 1966. Stanton, a faculty member since 1967, earned degrees from California Institute of Technol ogy and Harvard. A&M graduate to chair Rice hoard Texas A&M University graduate Robert R. Herring is the new chairman of the Rice University Board of Governors. Herring, chairman and chief executive officer of Houston Natural Gas Corp., was graduated from Texas A&M in 1941 with a degree in economics. He also is a recipient of Texas A&M’s Distinguished Alumni Award, the highest honor bes towed by the university. She was among 15 college and university student chosen for the prestigious internships sponsored by Sears, Roebeck and Co. The internship will include ap pointment to the staff of a member of the United states Senate or House of Representatives from Feb. 1 — April 30, 1980, and participa tion in an academic enrichment program while working in Washing ton, D.C. Newlin, a communications major, will be editor of The Battalion dur ing the fall semester. She has pre viously held newspaper internships with the Tyler Courier Times and The Eagle, Bryan-College Station. This summer, she is working for the Associated Press wire service in Houston. The daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Borah P. Newlin of Tyler, Newlin is also the recipient of Texas A&M’s outstanding junior award.
