Page 12 THE BATTALION WEDNESDAY, JUNE 6, 1979 Turner wants Woy on Seventh Avenue United Press International ATLANTA — Ted Turner, owner of the Atlanta Braves, emerged at least a partial winner from arbitra tion of Bob Horner’s contract dis pute but that didn’t stop him from aiming a bitter verbal attack Tues day at the slugging infielder’s agent, Bucky Woy. “I hope Horner sees that his agent led him down a primrose path for an extra $40,000,” said the out spoken Turner, referring to what Horner would receive over the Braves’ base offer because of the ar bitrator’s Monday ruling. “Woy made a lot of trouble for a lot of people, and I hope they think the extra $40,000, if they get that much, is worth it,” Turner said. “Maybe now, Horner will grow up and be like players like Dale Mur phy and everything will be fine from here on.” The $130,000 he must pay Horner may rankle Turner, who in dicated he is still upset over the death of General Manager Bill Lucas last month. Lucas, who had been a key man for the club in the negotiations, died of a cerebral hemorrhage. Turner recalled a statement at tributed to Woy that if he lost the negotiations, “I’ll vomit right on Seventh Avenue,’’ in New York City. Turner told reporters Tuesday: “I want you to call Bucky Woy and ask him when he’s going to vomit on Seventh Avenue. I want to be there. I want you to be there. I want a pho tographer there. I want everybody Parks get boost from gas prices Skyrocketing gasoline prices may actually boost visitation at state parks this summer, according to Texas Parks and Wildlife Depart ment officials. Parks Division officials reason that many Texans who usually travel out of the state may decide to save fuel by visiting nearby state parks. “There is a state park within the range of one tankful of gas for most people in Texas,” said Robert C. H auser of park operations and maintenance. Effective Jan. 1 this year, all state parks now are included in the reser vation system, whereby campsites may be reserved at least seven and up to 90 days in advance by mail, telephone or in person. Another suggestion is to consider going to the many attractive smaller parks, where there is likely to be more room than in the better known ones. For information on state parks, their addresses and telephone num bers, either write to the headquar ters of the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, 4200 Smith School Rd., Austin, TX 78744 or call toll- free, 1-800-252-9237. Braves over the next five years. “I’m not going to deal with Bucky Woy ever again,” he said. One of the points won by the Braves was that Horner could not become a free agent, thus tying him to the club for the next five years under baseball rules. Braves defeat Horner, 7-1 e< United Press International ATLANTA — Bob Horner, the Atlanta Braves’ 21-year-old power-hitting infielder, has fat tened his own pocketbook, but he may have sounded the death knell for future major-league baseball bonuses, starting with players selected in the current free agent draft. Horner lost out on seven of eight points of contention in a dispute arbitrated by University of Kansas law professor Raymond Goetz — including his hid for free-agent status. But the one he won was an unprecedented rul ing that the $175,000 the Braves gave him last summer as a bonus for signing must be counted as part of his 1978 salary while computing the minimum he can be paid in 1979. That would mean the Braves, who offered the 1978 National League Rookie of the Year $100,000 for this year, should have to pay him about $146,000. But Goetz indicated he’ll water that down a bit, probably to around $130,000 — which would still make Horner the highest paid second-year player in baseball history. Two Braves’ officials. General Manager John Mullen and attor ney Tench Coxe, predicted Goetz’s ruling means an end to major-league signing bonuses. “Futurely,” said Coxe, who helped prepare the Braves’ case for a May 10-11 arbitration hear ing in New York City, “prospects will be given minor league con tracts when they first sign.” Both sides viewed the decision as a victory. “We won seven out of eight points including the key issue of free agency,” said Coxe. “I’m disappointed in a way,” said Horner.
