Liquor industry takes
labeling issue to
United Press International
WASHINGTON — Proposed
regulations that would let beer,
wine and liquor drinkers know
what’s in the bottle through ingre
dient listing on the label are under a
new attack in court from distillers
and wine makers.
This time the industry contends
one government agency somehow
forced a second agency to push the
project. To prove its point the in
dustry has submitted testimony
from the former head of one of the
agencies involved, who now hap
pens to work for the liquor industry.
The proposal to require ingre
dient labeling on alcoholic bever
ages was issued two months ago by
the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and
Firearms, part of the Treasury De
partment.
The industry took the matter to
court and Judge James Gordon of
the U.S. District Court in
Owensboro, Ky., issued an order
late last week telling the bureau and
the Food and Drug Administration
they must appear next week to jus
tify what they are doing or be held
in contempt.
