Prison
lawsuit
returns
United Press International
HOUSTON — A much-delayed, thrice-moved lawsuit demanding
major Texas prison reforms returned to court Monday with more
inmate testimony about allegedly substandard conditions in the na
tion’s largest corrections system.
Outside the courtroom, a federal lawyer said discussion of an out-
of-court settlement had been renewed. But a state lawyer said he was
unaware of any movement toward quick resolution of the 6-year-old
Previous talk of settlement, which would require the parties’
agreement on a consent decree by U.S. District Judge William
Wayne Justice, has been unproductive.
In testimony, Stephen Dwight Thompson, 25, serving more than
500 years for robbery by assault, attempted escape and other of
fenses, said he had been in six Texas prisons and had witnessed or
suffered rights abuses in most of them.
On one occasion, Thompson said prison wardens and guards at
Ramsey Unit in Rosharon entered a white cellblock seeking inmate
assistance in forcing black inmates in another cellblock to go to bed.
Thompson said officials “asked for volunteers to help them rack up
the niggers in Seven Wing.” An inmate who volunteered for one of
baseball bats handed out later told him what happened: “They
jumped on the niggers and racked them up.”
Thompson said he once was forced to remain in a “sweat box for
three days without bathroom privileges.
On cross-examination by a state lawyer, Thompson said he ht—
been involved in several violent incidents in prison and had stabW-»
another prisoner.
Outside court, Justice Department lawyer David Vanderhooftok-i
reporters Texas Attorney General Mark White had inquired aboi—i
out-of-court settlement in a meeting with high Justice Department
officials in Washington.
“This is the first time somebody from the defense position has sam
let’s settle, Vanderhoof said. “I’ve been trying for settlement sine=
December 1977 and have been unsuccessful.”

SENIOR RING ORDERING PROCEDURE
FOR STUDENTS COMPLETING 92 HOURS AT THE END
OF THE SPRING ’79 SEMESTER
To be eligible to order the Texas A&M Senior Ring, an undergraduate student must have at least
ninety-two (92) semester hours, with 30 hours at A&M and be in good standing with the university. To
order at mid-semester using mid-semester grades to fulfill the above requirements, please note the
following instructions:
1. Mid-semester orders will be taken only from March 20th until April 27, 1979.
2. Leave your name, major and I D. number with the ring clerk, Heaton Building, prior to March 20th if
possible, or at least one week in advance of ordering. This may not be done by phone.
3. Bring mid-semester grade reports along when ready to order to verify passing hours for the spring
semester only.
4. Anyone having failed to leave their name in advance and fail to bring their mid-semester grade
report along when ready to order will be asked to return later to allow time for records to be
checked.
5. All rings must be paid for in full when the order is placed. Senior ring loans are available through
Student Financial Aid in the YMCA building.
6. Students who do not place their order during this period may order after final grades are posted.
There will be only a 1-2 week difference in delivery time for those students ordering after final
grades are posted during May. (Whenever 92 hours have been completed and are on record,
there is never a dead-line, except a monthly mailing date on which we send orders to the factory.)
7. The ring clerk is on duty from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day, Monday through Friday. However in order
for other duties to be carried out, no orders will be taken between 11:30 a m. - 1:00 p.m. or
between 4:00 - 5:00 p.m.
8. All rings ordered, regardless of whether on March 20th or April 27th, will be delivered on the same
day which will be approximately July 18, 1979.
