i Page 4 THE BATTALION TUESDAY, APRIL 3, 1979 Prison lawsuit returns United Press International HOUSTON — A much-delayed, thrice-moved lawsuit demanding major Texas prison reforms returned to court Monday with more inmate testimony about allegedly substandard conditions in the na tion’s largest corrections system. Outside the courtroom, a federal lawyer said discussion of an out- of-court settlement had been renewed. But a state lawyer said he was unaware of any movement toward quick resolution of the 6-year-old Previous talk of settlement, which would require the parties’ agreement on a consent decree by U.S. District Judge William Wayne Justice, has been unproductive. In testimony, Stephen Dwight Thompson, 25, serving more than 500 years for robbery by assault, attempted escape and other of fenses, said he had been in six Texas prisons and had witnessed or suffered rights abuses in most of them. On one occasion, Thompson said prison wardens and guards at Ramsey Unit in Rosharon entered a white cellblock seeking inmate assistance in forcing black inmates in another cellblock to go to bed. Thompson said officials “asked for volunteers to help them rack up the niggers in Seven Wing.” An inmate who volunteered for one of baseball bats handed out later told him what happened: “They jumped on the niggers and racked them up.” Thompson said he once was forced to remain in a “sweat box for three days without bathroom privileges. On cross-examination by a state lawyer, Thompson said he ht— been involved in several violent incidents in prison and had stabW-» another prisoner. Outside court, Justice Department lawyer David Vanderhooftok-i reporters Texas Attorney General Mark White had inquired aboi—i out-of-court settlement in a meeting with high Justice Department officials in Washington. “This is the first time somebody from the defense position has sam let’s settle, Vanderhoof said. “I’ve been trying for settlement sine= December 1977 and have been unsuccessful.” Battalion Classified University Center Scheduling Notice AT STUD f Trader Ric (TB) winner of $53,673-|S V own son of Swaps (848,900)-$500 to>:<| Quarter and Appaloosa mar foal-Sonny Ellen. 846-8509.
