Page d THE BATTALION FRIDAY. MARCH 23, 1979 Varsity I tenants want crossing repaired, ditcher fixed on ‘ownerless’ access street By ROBIN THOMPSON Battalion Reporter Tenants at the Varsity 1 apartments are caught between a rock and a hard place in the form of a foot and a half of water and a set of unmaintained railroad tracks. Carrol Street, located between Jersey Street and Welborn Road is the only access to the apart ments. It is submerged in water on one end and is crossed on the other by a set of damaged rail road tracks. Ted Powell, a tenant of the apartments and graduate student at Texas A&M University, has been unsuccessful in several at tempts at having the road re paired. He sent letters of complaint, with signatures of other apart ment residents, to the owner, Marion Pugh, to Arnold Bros. Lumber Co., a business adjacent to the road, and to the City of College Station. Pugh replied by saying there is nothing she can do because the road does not belong to her. Arnold Bros., Powell said, caused the flooding by filling in a drainage ditch. Arnold Bros, does not own the land the road is on, either. Powell next contacted Home Finder Realty, the company handling the Varsity 1 apart ments. They also denied having anything to do with the road. Powell said they responded to his letter as if it was an “empty threat.” v Powell took him complaint to the College Station City Council on March 8 and secured a place on the agenda for last night’s meeting. Since then the council has postponed hearing the issue until the April 12 meeting. North Bardell, city manager, said it was delayed because he is waiting to hear from Southern Pacific railroad about the condi tion of the crossing. Bardell said he would like to see the crossing closed. Powell said some of the rail road ties are gone or pushed down into the mud and there is dirt built up in places on the crossing. In addition, Carrol Street is a private road, Bardell said, al though he does not know who owns it. Powell said the tracks are hard on his car and he has gotten stuck on them several times. However, driving on the other end of the road involves the al most certain risk of getting stuck in the mud. Skill will not be the deciding factor in winning the Jerry Lewis Bowl-a- thon on Saturday. Instead, the amount of money raised by each contestant will decide the honors. The Bowl-a-thon, a project to raise money for the Muscular Dys trophy Association is being spon sored by the Texas A&M University chapter of Alpha Phi Omega, a na tional service fraternity. The tournament is open to all students, faculty, high school stu dents and community members. Each contestant is asked to get a list of sponsors who will pay a certain amount of money per pin knocked down. The tournament will start at noon and continue until each of the par ticipants has bowled three games. Bill Jentsch, APO co-chairman for the project, said the Bowl-a-thon is one of the fraternity’s yearly projects. He said that the most money raised by the bowl-a-thon in past years was about $6,000. The group hopes to do as well this year. First prize for the tournament is a $500 stereo system, consisting of a receiver, turntable and two speak ers. Second and third prizes will be announced. The prizes will be awarded on next Friday and March 31, the deadline for turning in all money collected for the bowl-a- thon. The winners will be deter mined by the amount of money turned in by each contestant. Jentsch said that interested people can sign up now to partici pate, but if they don’t get a chance to sign up they can show up on Saturday and bowl, as long as they get their sponsors in the following week before the deadline. He also said there will be a $1.50 entrance fee for the bowl-a-thon. All the proceeds from the bowl- a-thon will be turned over National Muscular Dystrophy sociation. Before an organization can) part in the nationally-televisedjf Lewis Labor Day Telethon in Vegas, it must raise at least $20,J Jentsch said any donation less f $20,000 is recognized by the gional office in Austin.
