WHAT’S UP focus entertainment section of T/re B&ttalion. Thursday, March 1 CEPHEID VARIABLE: “Damnation Alley.” (1977) Jan-Michael Vincent stars in this film about a nuclear holocaust that tips the Earth off its axis, with disastrous results to the climate. One small band of survivors travels northeast from Mexico in search of surviving civilizations. The film has superb special effects, including advanced laser techniques. At 8 and 10:30 p.m. in Rudder Theater. TENNIS: The team travels to Corpus Christi to compete in the Corpus Invitational Team Tournament. The contests will last all day through Saturday. SWIMMING: The men’s team will compete in the Southwest Con ference Championships in Austin through Saturday. GREAT ISSUES: “Test Tube Babies and Human Ethics” at 12:30 p.m. in Room 701, Rudder Tower. Friday, March 2 AGGIE CINEMA-CEPHEID VARIABLE: “Close Encounters of the Third Kind.” (1977) Richard Dreyfus stars in a story about aliens who attempt to make contact with people on Earth, and the efforts of a few people to encourage the alien visit. At 8 p.m. in Rudder Auditorium. AGGIE CINEMA: “The Graduate.” (1967) Dustin Hoffman stars as a very uncertain college graduate who searches for his future and is faced with disillusionment. Simon and Garfunkel provide the background music. At midnight in Rudder Theater. TOWN HALL: Johnny Rodriguez, versatile country and western singer, will appear in G. Rollie White Coliseum at 7:30 p.m. BASKETBALL: The women play Wayland Baptist College at 6:30 p.m. in Plainview. GYMNASTICS: The team competes in the TAIAW State Cham pionships today and tomorrow in San Marcos. Saturday, March 3 AGGIE CINEMA: “Coma.” (1978) Genevieve Bujold plays a young resident doctor who investigates the inexplicable tragedies in a Boston hospital. At 8 p.m. in Rudder Auditorium. AGGIE CINEMA-CEPHEID VARIABLE: “Close Encounters of the Third Kind.” (1977) At 8 p.m. in Rudder Auditorium. INDIA ASSOCIATION: The association will hold a meeting at 7:30 p.m. in Room 112 of the O&M building. A Hindi movie, “Swami,” will be shown with English subtitles. SOCCER: The men’s team will compete in the A&M Soccer Tour nament today and tomorrow. Games will be at 1 and 4 p.m. today and at 10 a.m. tomorrow on the intramural field. Sunday, March 4 AGGIE CINEMA: “The Ten Commandments.” (1956) Charlton Heston and Yul Brynner star in Cecil B. DeMille’s epic story of the life of Moses, who turned his back on a privileged life to lead his people to freedom. At 2 p.m. in Rudder Theater. THE BATTALION COVER There are many old houses in Bryan, and to go with some of them are ghost stories surrounding strange events or occurences that have taken place. The eerie effects provided by trees, falling porches and former residents’ belongings often add a touch of reality to the legends. Stories abound about other places too, including many of the old cemeteries found in this area, and some of them are so real as to be positively scary. EDITOR Gary Welch Johnny Rodriguez Monday, March 5 ARTS COMMITTEE: “That Obscure Object of Desire.” (1977) A darkly humorous satire in which director Luis Brunei states that the last revolutionary act is to be madly in love, and not have sex with the object of desire. At 8 p.m. in Rudder Theater. Tuesday, March 6 TOWN HALL: “The Sound of Music” will be performed at 8:15 p.m. in Rudder Auditorium. CIVIL ENGINEERS: The American Society of Civil Engineers will hold a meeting a 7 p.m. in Room 121 of the C.E. building. AGRICULTURE: The Mechanized Agriculture Club will have a hot dog roast and domino tournament at 6:30 p.m. in the power and machinery lab. FCA: The Fellowship of Christian Athletes meet at 8 p.m. every Tuesday in the Letterman’s Lounge, G. Rollie White Coliseum. Wednesday, March 7 AGGIE CINEMA: “Going My Way.” (1944) Bing Crosby stars in this nostalgic story of young Father O’Malley, who is sent by his bishop to help an older pastor in mortgage-ridden St. Dominic's parish. At 8 p.m. in Room 201 of the MSC. PARACHUTE: The TAMU Sport Parachute Club will meet at 8 p.m. in Room 510, Rudder Tower. Thursday, March 8 CEPHEID VARIABLE: “House on Haunted HHI.” (1958) Vincent Price stars in this classic ghost story that involves walking skele tons, blood-dripping ceilings, mysterious servants, disembodied heads and groaning doors. At 8 and 10:30 p.m. in the Basement Coffeehouse. BASKETBALL: The women will compete in the SWAIAW Regional Championship through Saturday. ENGINEERS: The Texas Society of Professional Engineers will meet at 7:30 p.m. in Room 103 of Zachry. Country and western singer Johnny Rodriguez will bring his band “The Hole in the Wall Gang" to G. Rollie White Col iseum tomorrow night at 7:30. Rodriguez, a native of Sabinal, Texas, is one of the first Chicanes to become a national star. His re gional influence has produced a bilingual, biracial talent that com bines many of the best qualities of his dual cultural legacy. His career began several years ago while he was in jail. A Texas Ranger heard him singing in the cell and introduced him to an agent. Shortly after that, he began playing with Tom T. Hall’s band. His versatile talent has taken him from small towns in Texas to Carnegie Hall in New York. His concert tours in England and Canada attest to his international recognition. In 1972, Rodriguez was voted Most Promising Male Vocalist by the Country Music Association. His songwriting ef forts have awarded him with six hit singles and four gold albums. Some of his most popular hits include: “Ramblin’ Man,” “Love Put a Song in My Heart,” “Spanish Eyes,” “Just Get Up and Close the Door” and the title track from his recent album, "Love Me With All Your Heart."
