Page 10 THE BATTALION WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 28, 1979 Student radio station to be back By JULIE SMILEY Battalion Reporter KANM radio is not broadcasting music for Aggies yet, but wait until it’s wired for sound. KANM, stereo radio available only via cable at 99.9 FM, has been off the air since December, but with some help from the telephone com pany music will sound once again. Roger Wieting, KANM station manager, said as soon as a telephone connection for the radio cable is hooked up to the new station head quarters, KANM will be back on the air. He said he hopes that will be the first week after spring break. KANM moved from broadcast facilities at Briarwood apartment complex on Highway 30 in De cember after one of about 60 volun teer disc jockeys was caught taking a piece of furniture from a storage room. Wieting said, “The manager at Briarwood asked us to leave and I don’t blame him,” Wieting said. “He wasn’t nasty about it at all, and there are no hard feelings between him and me.” Wieting said it has taken longer than he expected to broadcast be cause KANM doesn’t broadcast be tween semesters and the station moved to new facilities. New facilities for KANM are in Lounge B between Moore and Crocker halls. Carolyn Adair, direc tor of student activities, said space on campus is limited so when Wiet ing asked about the room, she told him to take it even though it is small. Wieting said when more radio equipment is moved in and carpet laid, he will be ready to organize his staff. All work for KANM is done by volunteers, except for ad salesmen who get a 15 percent commission on the ads they sell. He said KANM was originally sponsored and funded by student government, but now the station is self supporting. The only expenses are the equipment, and Wieting, a double major in mechanical and electrical engineering, said he saves money by building and repairing lots of the equipment himself. He said the station broadcasts 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Wieting said he needs about 60 vol unteers to announce for six-hour shifts, report news and sell ads. No radio experience or third-class license is necessary to work as a disc jockey for KANM and he said, “We really need some people with a few extra hours a week to work. “Musical format for KANM will be rock, progressive country and jazz,” Wieting said. “You won’t hear much of the Commodores or Bee Gees, at least not their new stuff.” Cosmonauts board Salyut successfully get surprise greeting!
