Page 4 THE BATTALION MONDAY, FEBRUARY 26, 1979 Astronomers view total eclipse United Press International PORTLAND, Ore. — Astronom ers are converging on a small public observatory in the Cascade Mountains and modern-day Druids are heading for a replica of Stonehenge for today’s eclipse — last total eclipse of the sun visible in contintental United States this cen tury. The total eclipse, when the moon blots out the sun, began just after sunrise at 8:09 a.m. PST (10:09 a.m. CST) today in the northeastern Pacific Ocean and ends 90 minutes later just after Greenland’s sunset. Along a path 170 to 190 miles wide through Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Montana, North Dakota, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario and Greenland the total eclipse will be visible —weather permitting — for periods ranging from just under 44 seconds to 2 minutes, 52 sec onds. A partial eclipse will be visible over most of the United States, ranging from 57 percent at Atlanta to 91 percent at Minneapolis. The weather outlook for eclipse time is not good, the National Weather Service said. Clouds were forecast west of the Cascades in Oregon and Washington and partly cloudy skies were predicted east of those mountains. “Though the forecast is not par ticularly optimistic, this type of weather pattern favors some periodic breaks in the cloud cover, especially east of the Cascades,’’ said James D. Wakefield, meteorologist in charge of the Port land office of NWS. At Goldendale, Wash., observers were hoping for a break in the weather like the one which occurred during the last total eclipse of the sun visible in northwestern United States June 9, 1918. That time the clouds parted just in time to give observers a perfect view of the ec lipse, then closed in again. Isaac Bonewits, of Berkeley, Calif, leader of a group from the New Reformed Druids of North America, said, “We expect to clear away any clouds that might hide the sun. We have some weather magi cians in our midst and with that many emotionally involved we can invoke enough spiritual energy to move a few clouds around.” The Druids are converging on the replica of Stonehenge, the stone structure in England which legend associates with the ancient Druids, to conduct rites “to pray for the he aling of the earth and the people on it.” Ophthalmologists warned that no one should look directly at the sun during either total or partial eclipse because the rays would cause per manent eye damage. Even sun glas ses are not sufficient safeguard, health authorities warned. The safest way to view the eclipse, they said, is on television. After Special Assistant U.S. Attorney Alan M. Liebermanoutlined the details of the change of plea for the Philadelphia Democrat, El berg quietly told a federal judge that he had agreed to the plea, U.S. District Court Judge Raymond Broderick reserved rulinj whether he would accept the plea. “I’m not bound as a judge by the terms of that agreement and tli court at this time is reserving the right to accept or reject that agret merit, Broderick said. Under terms of the agreement, Eilberg will be sentenced toi period of probation to be determined by the court, if it accepts tli plea, and fined up to $10,()()() but not less than $5,000. Lieberman stressed that “no term of the agreement shall inhibi the government to pursue civil remedies from him or realized by bin in violation of his public trust.” “If the court does reject this agreement, you will be given an opportunity to withdraw your plea of guilty, ” Broderick told Eilberg The change of plea came as a surprise in the slow-moving (rial which began Tuesday and had been beset with repeated delaysduei lengthy jury selection and a number of motions which Broderickbal to consider. Eilberg, 58, had been charged with violating a federal conflicld interest statute which prohibits members of Congress from receivinj compensation for advocating private causes before federal agenciesii which the government has an interest. Eilberg had been accused of drawing thousands of dollars fromtb account of a law firm as his share of a fee the firm received for belpii Hahnemann Medical College and Hospital of Philadelphia obtaintlii grant from the Community Services Administration, an anti-poveiti agency. He was indicted last Oct. 24, about two weeks before he uns» cessfully sought a seventh term as representative for Pennsylvaniai 4th Congressional District, which includes northeast Philadelphia At the time of the indictment, Eilberg denied the charge claimed it was timed to hurt his re-election chances. Eilberg gained national attention in January 1978 when it was closed that he had telephoned President Carter and asked bimli “expedite” the dismissal of former U.S. Attorney David VV. Marsh a Republican. It was learned at the time that Marston, appointed by Presideil Gerald Ford, had been investigating the roles allegedly played It Eilberg and fellow Pennsylvania congressman Daniel Flood.
