The high court Wednesday up held a 1969 Texas law that prohibits optometrists from using any name other than the one on their state license to practice. About 20 states have similar laws. A Federal Trade Commission spokesman said the ruling gives states a green light “to prevent BATTALION CLASSIFIED SPECIAL NOTICE W W W *9 WWW W 9'^ w W ^ m w ’ SPECIAL NOTICE FOR RENT — — >> a HELP WANTED > a a ^ ^ w HELP WANTED ^ ^ A. people from mass merchandising under trade names.” This would inhibit companies such as Sears, Roebuck and Co. from entering the health care mar ket, the spokesman said, restricting consumer choice and sending prices up. In other actions, the court: —Agreed to review the govern ment’s controversial health standards for worker exposure to the suspected carcinogen, benzene. —Promised to consider New York City’s plea that the government wrongly denied $3.5 million in spe cial education aid. —Chose to review a Dallas de segregation plan permitting “one race’’ schools in the city because of the long distances students would have to be bused. —Denied an appeal by televison reporter Joe Pennington of a 60-day jail sentence for refusing to identify a “source” in a Kansas murder case. THE BATT DOES IT DAILY Monday through Friday United Press International EL PASO — An immense inves tigation into organized crime in six states could produce swift and numerous indictments by a grand jury that has interviewed a host of witnesses, including two who shielded their identities by wearing hoods from the public, a U.S. attor ney reports. Three states — Florida, New Mexico and Arizona — were added Wednesday to the list of states in volved in the wideranging investiga tion of alleged interstate racketeer ing, gambling, prostitution and drug trafficking. Government investigators from Texas, Nevada and Washington al ready are involved in the case. “There are three federal grand juries alone in the Western Judicial District of Texas involved in ele ments of this investigation,” U.S. Attorney Jamie Boyd said Wednes day. After two mysterious black- shrouded figures appeared before the 23-member federal grand jury, Boyd declined to detail any specifics of testimony that linked the other states to the investigation. How ever, one official said privately, “We’ve got what we need now.” “The early stages of the investiga tion are almost completed,” Boyd said, “and we can expect more in dictments to come reasonably soon from this grand jury.” He said Texas federal grand juries in El Paso, Midland and San An tonio were involved in related in vestigations which were touched off by the Nov. 21 assassination attempt on Assistant U.S. Attorney James Kerr at San Antonio, and the Dec. 23 slaying of Lee Chagra at his El Paso office. There has been speculation inves tigators from the FBI, Drug Enforcement Administration and Internal Revenue Service may have gained leads on organized crime ac tivities while poring over records in Chagra’s law office. Local police locked everyone but law officers out of the office for five days after the killing, reportedly to the chagrin of clients represented by the attorney, known locally as “F. Lee Chagra,” who defended notorious gambling and narcotics defendants. Boyd indicated witnesses from the other states may be included in up to 200 persons to be subpoenaed by the local grand jury. One source said “about 40” witnesses from Las Vegas may be called to testify. Chagra’s brothers Jimmie, a Las Vegas gambler, and Joe, an El Paso attorney, have appeared before the secret panel as have several of the slain attorney’s friends. Kerr, 38, former head of a narco tics task force in the Western Dis trict of Texas who has built a long record of convictions, was am bushed near his home in San An tonio by two men who fired 19 bul lets into the hood and fender of his automobile. Kerr escaped with minor glass cuts and has been assist ing with the investigation. names is likely to be an attacl legal clinics.
