    Festival
For any of you going home to Laredo this
weekend, or just heading that way, the First An
nual Jalapeno Street Festival will be held there
Saturday. The festival, which will take place in
San Agustin Plaza, will feature a Miss Jalapeno
79 beauty contest, a "no-holds-barred”
jalapeno-eating contest, an international waiters'
race, live music, food and drinks.
The beauty contest is open to all interested
girls 17 or over. The jalapeno-eating contest is
open to anyone over 18 who wants to enter, but
the contestant must first fill out a liability release
form. The waiters’ race will feature contestants
from various hotels and restaurants in Mexico
and the United States.
The Jalapeno Street Festival is part of
Laredo's annual Washington’s Birthday Celebra
tion, which also features a Colonial pageant,
Colonial ball, international parade, horse racing,
Mexican rodeo, fireworks and two carnivals.

try, often filled with waterfalls like the one at right.

CEPHEID VARIABLE: "This Island Earth.” (1955) Visitors from
distant Metaluna come to earth seeking human brainpower to
save their planet in an interstellar war, and attempt to force a
scientist to cooperate with their plans. At 8 and 10:30 p.m. in the
Basement Coffeehouse.
BASKETBALL: The women host the University of Texas at Ar
lington at 5:30 p.m. in G. Rollie White Coliseum.
GYMNASTICS: The team competes against Jefferson State Junior
College at 7 p.m. in Birmingham, Alabama.
OP AS: “A Festival of Russian Dance.” Some of Russia’s finest
dancers will perform in a kaleidoscope of colorful costumes, folk
dancers and native music from throughout the Soviet Union. At 8
p.m. in Rudder Auditorium.
RINGS: Deadline for ordering senior rings for delivery by May
graduation. See the ring clerk in Heaton Hall.
SCONA: Speeches scheduled for today include: Dr. Murray
Wiedenbaum at 8:30 a.m., Bill Cunningham at 1 p.m., and Dr.
Joseph Burns at 3:30 p.m., all in Rudder Theater.
TEEX: The Texas Engineering Extension Service will hold a meet
ing from 7 to 9 p.m. in Room 109 at A&M Consolidated High
School. The topic of the meeting will be "How to Do an Energy
Analysis of Your Current Home.” The speakers will be Dr. Lee
Phillips and Charlene Clark of TEEX.
FEBRUARY 16
AGGIE CINEMA: “Saturday Night Fever.” (1978) John Travolta
stars as a local disco king at the peak of his popularity. At 8 p.m.
in Rudder Auditorium.
AGGIE CINEMA: “Which Way Is Up?” (1977) Richard Pryor stars
in this comedy about love, seduction, jealousy and betrayal in
the strife-torn California farm country.
GYMNASTICS: The team competes against Auburn University and
the University of Georgia in Auburn, Alabama.
SCONA: Speeches scheduled for today include: Dr. Clifton B. Cox
at 1 p.m. and Dr. Harold E. Sorrows at 2:30 p.m., both in Rudder
Theater.
DEADLINE: For ordering graduation announcements.
FEBRUARY 17

GYMNASTICS: The team will compete in the SWAIAW Regional
Championships in Baton Rouge, Lousiana.
TENNIS: The team hosts Texas Westleyan at 8:30 a.m. and Hardin
Simmons at 1:30 p.m.
SCONA: The wrap-up speech will be given today by Texas Lt. Gov.
William P. Hobby Jr. at 11 a.m. in Room 224 of the MSC.
LACROSSE: The team will host the University of Texas at 1 p.m.
on the main drill field.
FEBRUARY 18
LACROSSE: The team will host the San Antonio Lacrosse Club at
1 p.m. on the main drill field.
FEBRUARY 19
ARTS COMMITTEE: “Doctor Mabuse, the Gambler.” (1922) A si
lent movie in which Dr. Mabuse is a merciless, power-hungry
master of disguise who escapes from the police time and again,
only to be caught by his own clever defenses. Directed by Fritz
Lang. At 8 p.m. in the Basement Coffeehouse.
FEBRUARY 20
BASKETBALL: The men host Rice University at 7:30 p.m. in G.
Rollie White.
TENNIS: The team will play Trinity University in San Antonio.
CAM AC: William Velasquez will give a speech on the current law
suit against the City of Bryan concerning the redistricting of vot
ing precincts. The speech will be at 7:30 p.m. in Room 301 of
Rudder Tower. A reception will be held afterward in Room 205 of
the MSC.
FEBRUARY 21
AGGIE CINEMA: “A Raisin in the Sun.” (1961) Sidney Poitier stars
in this drama about a poor family that receives a $10,000 insur
ance check, and their different ideas for the money. At 8 p.m. in
Room 201 of the MSC.
PARACHUTE: The TAMU Sport Parachute Club will hold a meet
ing at 8 p.m. in Room 301, Rudder Tower.
FEBRUARY 22
CEPHEID VARIABLE: “The Point.” (1971) An animated film of
imagination and comedy about a kingdom in which everything
and everybody has a point — except a young boy named Oblio.
At 8 and 10 p.m. in Room 601 of Rudder Tower.
BASKETBALL: The women will compete in the TAIAW State
Championship through Saturday in College Station.
