Grambling
paper is
delayed
United Pi •ess International
GRAMBLING, La. — Grambling
State University administrators held
up distribution of the student news
paper for three days and the editor
claims the delay was prompted by
stories about violent attacks on stu
dents.
University Vice President Kermit
McMurray delayed delivery of Fri
day’s edition of The Gramblinite
until Monday, claiming that would
be a better time for distribution be
cause many students go home for
the weekend. The weekly paper
normally is distributed on Fridays.
Caesar Andrews, the student
editor, said school officials asked
that stories about the stabbing of
one Grambling student and the kill
ing of another be dropped. After the
editors declined, administrators
asked that the papers be withheld.
McMurray said he found the arti
cles acceptable and did not intend to
restrict the flow of news.
“I thought they did a good job,”
he said. “I didn t find anything
wrong with them.” He said a stu
dent committee was appointed to
decide when the paper should be
distributed in the future, calling it
“an internal thing.”
Pete Dosher, university jour
nalism director and an adviser to the
paper, said Me Murray’s statement
about the delay was a surprise.
“This is the first I have heard of
that,” Dosher said. “In the past 20
years I have always told student
journalists to ‘Tell it like it is.
