Page 14 THE BATTALION TUESDAY. JANUARY 16 1979 Alle n s army meets United Press International A 78-76 victory over Tejcas A&M before a record crowd in your home arena can do wonderous things for a basketball coach. It can even make his back feel better. “My back still hurts,” stud SMU coach Sonny Allen, who has been suffering from a pinched nerve. “But after Saturday night I don’t notice it as much.” Allen, his sore back and his sud denly enthused basketball team will host the Texas Tech Red Raiders (3-1) tonight in a resumption of the tangled Southwest Conference bas ketball chase. The Rice Owls (2-2 in conference play), who beat both SMU and Texas Tech last week, will be at home against the Texas Longhorns (3-1) in the other highlight game this evening and the Houston Cougars (1-3), who broke a three-game losing streak Saturday with a decision over TCU, will visit the Baylor Bears (1-2). The biggest turnaround of the early conference going was pro duced by SMU, which was whipped by Rice in Houston (a game in which Allen said his team put forth little effort during the first half) only to come back on Saturday night and down the 12th-ranked Aggies. “Yeah, I would have to say it was the biggest win we’ve had since I’ve been here,” said Allen, who is in his fourth year with the Mustangs. “It was at home before a record crowd against a top-ranked team. And the fact it was the Aggies always makes it big.” And how did the Mustangs come back after such a disappointing ef fort against Rice. “It’s hard to explain,” Allen said. “It’s just part of athletics and the emotion in it. Coaches try every- thing, but there is just not an ans- w er to it. I don’t think you can fake inten- S1 ty. It’s just like you can’t force yourself to be a nice guy. It has to be a ’^Utural thing. But we have tried to practice w hh intensity lately. We have some 100 per cent intensity drills. Maybe carried over a little. Now that we Ve beaten A&M we know we can b ea t the best teams in the country.” Allen’s son, Billy, scored 24 Points against A&M and plaved used his quickness to help overcome the Aggies’ height and muscle. One of the areas he (Billy) could improve sometime,” said Allen, “is ELBERT DARDEN, who helped the Rice Owls pull off two surprise victories last week, was named Monday as the UPI South west Conference player of the week. that I don’t think he wants to be dominate. He feels he is too selfish if he does that. “But the other night you could see it on his face. He was going to take it to them. He doesn’t want to be thought of as a hall hog. But he needs to penetrate and kick the ball off and create opportunities and that’s what he did against A&M. Another full houses Moody Coliseum forty game. The Raiders are I talented group with a 1,1 n ess, said Allen. “TL J a lot of kids. They mav J known as some, but (L have some veterans o (Ceofl) Huston and(K So they have a BnJn 1 hey are all solid basket^ I hey are a different tv than Texas A&M hut, teams could give eadifl lems. That will be a J when they play.” Handball football BASEBALL SWIMWEAR WYATT’S SPORTING GOODS 505 University Drive Northgate 846-6715 1641 South Texas Av Culpepper Plaza 693-2949 Headquarters for all your Athletic Needs ATHLETIC SHOES Southwest Conference Standings CONFERENCE Cousin-on-cousin Battalion photo by Mark Patterson Texas A&M’s Rudy Woods goes up against a cousin of his, SMU’s Reggie Franklin.
