SAN ANTONIO — A 57-year-old
man, seeking revenge and operating
as if he “just had a job to do,”
quietly confronted a chained pris
oner on his way to the courtroom to
be tried for killing the man’s sons.
Juan Rodriguez then pulled out a
pistol and fired all six shots at Jimmy
Garza, 31 — one of 15 chained pris
oners — walked from a paddy
wagon to a side door of the Bexar
County Courthouse Monday.
The shooting finished, Rod
riguez, father of two men Garza was
accused of killing, dropped his pistol
on the courthouse sidewalk and sur
rendered. Later in the day he was
charged with murder.
“He didn’t try to escape or no
thing. He just had a job to do and he
had done it,” said a deputy. “Then
he just put the gun down and gave
up.”
No other injuries were reported.
Garza was being taken to the
courthouse to be tried in the shoot
ing deaths of Rodriguez’ sons, Al
fredo, 32, and Eleodoro, 38, at a bar
on Aug. 13, 1977.
