Meeks of Waco lias been honored by the Society of American Military Engineers as the outstanding 1977-78 en gineering student in the Naval ROTC program. The national award consists of a certificatete and gold medal. The award would normally have been presented last spring at Pa rents Day ceremonies. The award cites Meeks’ academic achievement in nuclear engineering. Upon graduation next May, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Walter A. Meeks Sr., of Waco, will he commissioned an ensign in the U.S. Navy. His record l»ook will be en tered in national competition lor one of two $1,000 scholarships provided by Allied Mills, Inc. Altenhof, 20. is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Howard Altenhof of New Braunfels. He is a junior at Texas A&M University majoring in animal science. He has had many outstanding accomplishments during his 4-H career, including being named a national winner in the 4-H Beef Program, being on the first place livestock judging team at State 4-H Roundup, receiving the State Fair of Texas Honor Award, and being recognized at the Rural Youth Honor Banquet at the San Antonio Livestock Show. He has attended the National 4-H Citizenship Shortcourse and Heritage Tour. Texas 4-H Ecol ogy and Texas 4-H Range Camp. At Texas A&M he has been on the national champion wool judg ing team, the meats judging team and is active in Alpha Zeta and the Collegiate 4-H Club. Freshman icins trip to national congress State 4-H olficals with the Texas Agricultural Extension Service announced that Laura Walker will receive an expense-paid trip to the National 4-H Congress in Chicago, Nov. 26-30, by v irtue of her outstand ing record book. The record book will he entered in national competition for six educational scholarships for $1,000 each pro vided by the National 4-H Coun cil. A freshman at Texas A&M University, Walker, 18, is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Gene Walker of Shelby. The animal science major has been a member of 4-H for seven years, where she served in various club offices and committees. This year she was vice-president of the Shelby County 4-H Council. Walker has won numerous awards during her 4-H career, including second in showman ship and 12th in halter at the State 4-H Horse Show this year. She won sixth in halter at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo in 1976. Last year she was the third highest individual in horse judging at the State 4-H Roundup. She has also competed at the State 4-H Horse Show as a member of the State Champion Regular Drill Team and State Champion Precision Drill Team. She was named Shelby County Gold Star Girl for 1975. She has been High Point County Horse man for two years. This year she won a $6,000 Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo Scholarship and a $1,500 Go Texan Scholarship, also, pro vided by the Houston Stock Show. An honor stu dent, Walker served as class secretary for four years and was vice-president of the National Honor Society. She received the DAR Citizenship Award this year and was a member of the annual staff two years. Asphalt scholarships go to three at A&M W. Vernon Wright Petroleum Asphalt Scholarships have been awarded to three Texas A&M University students. Recipients are Carolyn Y. Jacobs and Michael W. Lehman of Corpus Christi and Robert G.
