Page 14 THE BATTALION THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 7, 1978 U.S. team finishes second in tournament By DERRICK GRUBBS Following what can be safely cal led the longest road trip of their young careers, the United States World Tournament team returns home today after winning the silver medal for second place at the World Amateur Baseball Championship Tournament in Italy. The tournament began Aug. 25 and ended Wednesday with the U.S. posting a 9-1 record. Their only loss came at the hands of gold medalist Cuba, who finished the tourney 10-0. Korea took the bronze medal for third place with an 8-2 slate. Tom Chandler of Texas A&M was the head coach of the United States team, his first position as coach of an American team in international competition. Mark Thurmond was one of five Aggies who played for the U.S. team and the senior lefthander from Houston Spring Branch has much to show for his efforts. Thurmond was named the Most Variable Pitcher of the World Tour nament, having posted a 3-0 record — , ■ Mark Thurmond and turned in the lowest earned- run-average of any hurler in the tournament with a perfect 0.00. He hurled one shutout against Korea, [Mill ^BROOKS £3conVERSE allowed one unearned run against Mexico and pitched seven shutout innings against Australia in his last outing. Thurmond also struck out 25 batters in 25 innings of pitching. Junior outfielder Mike Hurdle of A&M also played well during the tournament, collecting eight hits, including a three-run homerun in a win over Holland. Senior pitcher Mark Ross made two appearances, both in relief roles. He hurled a total of five in nings and allowed four hits. Senior first baseman Kyle Hawthorne collected four hits, three of them in one game against Belgium. Senior catcher Buster Turner did not see any action until the U.S.’ final game against Nicaragua when he went 0-1. First baseman Tim Wallach of Cal State Fullerton was named the Most Valuable Player of the tournament. Wallach led all batters in runs scored (13), hits (15), and RBI’s (15). He was second in homeruns with four and batted .424 for the tourna- nent. Final ceremonies for the tourna ment were held Wednesday night in Bologna, Italy before a crowd of 12,000. The U.S. team is scheduled to ar rive in New York City at 5 p.m. (CDT) today. Chandler and the five Aggie players will arrive at Hous ton’s Intercontinental Airport around 9 p.m. tonight. Franklin made 16 of 28 field goal attempts last year and led the Aggies in scoring with 86 points.
