CULPEPPER PLAZA COLLEGE STATION 10-6 MON.-SAT. Matamoros feels effects after rioting United Press International MATAMOROS, Mexico — Sev eral burned out buildings and do zens of soldiers guarding city hall and the mayor’s house were the only signs Wednesday of the rioting that has struck this normally peaceful border city for two nights, leaving three rioters dead and scores in jured. Soldiers were stationed at the ci ty’s main square where most of the rioting took place Monday night after a demonstration against police brutality turned violent and at the home of Mayor Antonio Cavazos, about three blocks from the Interna tional Bridge linking Matamoros to Brownsville. Hundreds of protesting youths taunted soldiers with rocks and bricks Tuesday night before clearing the streets about midnight. One band of students went to the red- light district and wrecked a night club they said was owned by Police Chief Emiliano del Toro. The students apparently were not satisified with the suspension of del Toro and 11 other officers Tuesday and the firing of three others. The firings and suspensions in volved the alleged beating death of 14-year-old Salvador Vargas Barba, last week. Baiba died in a jail cell and the students claim he was beaten by police who demanded 400 pesos from the youth’s family before allow ing him to be taken to a hospital. Government officials said soldiers would stay in the area until they were sure the situation had calmed.
