Marceau earns reputation

Legends rarely match the images
eated around them.
But Marcel Marceau does. The
teatest pantomimist in the world
jiptured the attention of 2,500 in a
Rudder Auditorium Wednesday
night. The Opera and Performing
Juts Society presented the two-hour
erformance.
,He controlled the audience so
|well that no sounds except re-
sssed coughs were audible during
jiost of the evening — rare for a
j-oup that size.
But when he wanted a loud reac
tion, he would simply change the
ipression on his white-painted face
ft- move an arm, and the audience
}ould giggle or laugh, as if on cue.
He began the performance with
[style pantomimes, which are
weryday experiences, outlined by
Marceau’s silent motions and filled
in with the audience s imagination.
His partner Pierre Verry, also a
yell-respected pantomimist, intro-
need each sequence by standing

nd holding a lettered banner.
Marceau, now in his mid-50s,
feated 15 different characters in
The Public Garden,” including two
pssiping old women, a man with a
bgon a leash and a balloon vendor.
In another pantomime he illus
trated the temptations of drink and
pleasure experienced by a new
angel. Colored lights exposed Mar
ceau in a storm, trying to fly with his
new angel-wings. Blue lights and
solemn choral music soon reminded
the angel of the proper path, and all
ended well.
Comedy and sadness often fol
lowed each other closely in his
vignettes. In “The Mask Maker,”
Marceau created laughter as he
switched from the comedy to the
tragedy “masks” behind a quick pass

ago, scoffed at man’s vanities and
fears, but he also celebrated life and
declared it good with BIP’s failure to
commit suicide.
His instantaneous character
changes, from playful David to hulk
ing Goliath, took place behind a
black screen. These showed the full
range of Marceau’s talent and
prompted one of three standing ova

After intermission, Marceau ap
peared as “BIP, the clown who has
become the star’s alter-ego since its
creation in 1947. Modeled after the
late Charlie Chaplin’s “Little
Tramp,” BIP wears a striped shirt,
tight white jumpsuit and battered

BIP tamed lions, played David
