But Marcel Marceau does. The teatest pantomimist in the world jiptured the attention of 2,500 in a Rudder Auditorium Wednesday night. The Opera and Performing Juts Society presented the two-hour erformance. ,He controlled the audience so |well that no sounds except re- sssed coughs were audible during jiost of the evening — rare for a j-oup that size. But when he wanted a loud reac tion, he would simply change the ipression on his white-painted face ft- move an arm, and the audience }ould giggle or laugh, as if on cue. He began the performance with [style pantomimes, which are weryday experiences, outlined by Marceau’s silent motions and filled in with the audience s imagination. His partner Pierre Verry, also a yell-respected pantomimist, intro- need each sequence by standing I'like a statue in a white-plummed hat nd holding a lettered banner. Marceau, now in his mid-50s, feated 15 different characters in The Public Garden,†including two pssiping old women, a man with a bgon a leash and a balloon vendor. In another pantomime he illus trated the temptations of drink and pleasure experienced by a new angel. Colored lights exposed Mar ceau in a storm, trying to fly with his new angel-wings. Blue lights and solemn choral music soon reminded the angel of the proper path, and all ended well. Comedy and sadness often fol lowed each other closely in his vignettes.
