McHugh, staff director of the National Conference of Catholic Bishops’ Committee for Pro-Life Activities. McHugh’s suggestion that teen age pregnancy is dropping con trasted with the findings of Wendy Baldwin of the National Institutes of Health. Scientists at the Chihuabuan |ert Research Institute want to out if insects native to the hwest can be used to control ;e weeds that have pestered itock and ranchers since the of the buffalo. Then they want nd out which bugs wovdd be for the job. Apparently they've discovered jile a few insects that are natural I on weeds, ’ said Dwight Deal, [cation director. “What we re hi ed with right now is basically rmininga little bit about the life leofthese critters.’ Grainer Hunt, research di- or, called the project a “shot in dark.” Although there is no on to believe it will work, he said, certainly worth investigating. [Tlie wooly loco weed is a posion- plant in West Texas,” Hunt . “The kinds of insects haven’t n determined, but we think e are some natural insects that ontrol it. But we re not sure. Initial studies focus on fly, weevil and moth larvae that feed on the flower, seeds and roots of the plant. Experiments in California have had limited success using non native insects to trim patches of non-native weeds, such as Russian thistle or tumbleweeds, but the in teraction between weeds and in sects native to the Southwest is rela tively unknown. Ultimately, the researchers want to find out which of the bugs should be bred and then placed among un wanted weeds. “The insects will reduce the numbers of the plant species to a certain level, but it won t give com plete eradication, ' said Wehmeyer. “Hopefully, a certain equilibrium will be reached where there are still some plants around. McHugh said Wednesday that teen pregnancy statistics often are distorted “so as to increase the crisis atmosphere and generate ac ceptance for government-funded programs of abortion and contracep tion for teen-agers without parental knowledge or consent.” He said sex education reflects “a utilitarian philosophy (give con traceptive information to cut down out of wedlock pregnancy) while re- Embrey’s Jewelry We Specialize In ' Aggie Rings. Babies of young mothers are gener ally smaller and often more suscep tible to illness, mental retardation and birth defects, she added. “Young teen-age mothers, in par ticular, may have to drop out of school or stop working, at least tem porarily,’ she said. Those mothers thus have lower skills, narrow job options, little opportunity, and in creased social and economic pres sures, so that many “find public as sistance the only short-term solu tion. “It is thus not surprising that over two-thirds of teen-ager mothers in one group studied became welfare recipients soon after the birth of their first child, she said.
