Streetcar welcome change THE BATTALION Page 5 THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 23, 1978 sd LI n d and lean By MARY ALICE WOODHAMS it Pulitzer-prizewinning plays area t Hthe Aggie Players’ usual fare. But ■.•neither are performers like Ellen Dowling, Linda Nystedt and Bill Weldon, the leads in Tennessee Williams’ “Streetcar Named De sire.” The preparation involved in this play is evident, and this comes Review across as one of the Players’ more stunning efforts. Williams’ play calls for actors with dimension and experience arid this time the Players found some. Linda Nystedt, a French teacher at Bryan’s Allen Academy, is the nerve-wracked Blanche Dubois. Blanche’s problems include her tragic love affair, her deceased rela tives, her drinking, and the fact that she s an unclaimed jewel over 30. Blanche’s sister Stella (Ellen Dowling) is a woman who left her Southern-belle heritage to marry a Polish factory worker in New Or leans. She’s pregnant, poor and happy, until Blanche comes to visit, riding on a streetcar with the un likely name “Desire. The other corner of the triangle is Stella’s husband Stanley Kowalski (Bill Weldon) who lends an almost comic air to his tough-guy role. Blanche views her sex as the only thing she has to sell. Stella’s brand of sexuality, the steadfast, matronly kind, is the thing that keeps her bound in a difficult marriage. Nancy Pride’s directing brings this contrast to its hilt, punctuating the tragic view of the women’s self-images. Nystedt’s ten-year absence from the theater hasn’t hurt her acting. As Blanche she is nervous to the point of being intense, and she commands all the audience’s atten tion. Perhaps an element of sadness should have come across, for she iw ini in* iai tm in« wj w iw w« mi w w w w w v tfwvw w w w to* ] 1 is I! I l l l l , _ is L surely has enough to be sad about. Dowling is hearty, naive, trusting as Stella, and Weldon’s performance as Stanley, is also superb. Terry Martin is weak as Mitch, Blanche’s new boyfriend, and other supporting roles are merely adequate. The set is decorated in what might resemble a college student’s home, and the costumes are 40s enough to be convincing. But a “hot Summer in New Orleans’ just doesn tcorpe off. Maybe moving the floor fan into the audience’s view would help -— or having more ef fects than the characters’ passing mention of their sweat. | Mon.-Fri. 11 til 2 5 til 10 ShiLotf Sat. & Sun. 11:30 tit 2:30 5 til 10 STEAKHOUSE CHICKEN FRIED STEAK Covered with rich cream gravy, homemade rolls, one trip to our famous salad bar, choice of baked potato or french fries.
