Henderson A student can end up on the out- ide of the campus looking in if he [uestions the authority of the cam- ms police. Texas A&M University Police Tiief O.L. Luther said the campus police have the authority to sub- pit a written report to Dr. Charles Powell, director of student affairs. He explained if a student refuses to limply with police or campus regu- ations he can be withdrawn from chool. An officer also has the authority to m'te a ticket asking the offender to ppear in the College Station Munic- pal Court. Luther added that occasions such s these rarely happen. Some University police officers aid they have trouble with students lot realizing how much authority the ampus police have. The officers dded, however, that when students ive them trouble they are usually ust angry about getting a ticket and Ion t mean anything personal. Officer Karen Schluter, one of the omen officers, said she has never ad anyone question her authority as campus officer, but has had one incident where she was questioned cause she is a female. T tried to write him a campus licket and he wouldn t take it. She lore it up and tried to write him a ijustice of the peace ticket, which ;oes directly to municipal court in tend of the police department. She xplained, “He brought it back in the ffice after I finished writing it and alked to my lieutenant. He just lidn’t want to take it because I was a male. “He took it anyway, she added. Morris Maddox, assistant chief, aid before 1968 the campus police lad some problems with students lot taking the officers seriously, owever, in 1968 the Texas Senate lassed a bill which states that cam- ms police are certified officers. “Since then we re recognized as egular police officers," Maddox aid, “and I think students realize t.” Campus police authority covers university property. “They have the «ame jurisdiction on university property as the Bryan-College Sta- ion police have within their incor porated limits,” Luther said. Campus police do not have author ity off campus, however. Marvin Byrd, College Station police chief. said if the campus police ever need off campus authority they can get it from the College Station Police De partment. "I would give it to them because police officers are police officers, By rd said. “They are certified offi cers and they can enforce the law. The city police and campus police have no conflicts such as showing up at an incident at the same time since the two departments are in different jurisdictions, Byrd said. “We don t answer calls on the university and they don t answer calls on the city .’ he said. Luther said the campus police have the authority to use their guns if necessary. He added that campus police must use the same judgment regarding the use of a gun as any other law officer. A police officer may use his gun to protect a citizen, to protect himself, or to stop a felony being committed, Byrd said. Luther and Maddox both said they know of no instances when a campus officer has had to use a gun. How ever, there have been reports from students saying the campus police have drawn guns on them. “They mainly carry them for secu rity reasons, Luther said. "Check ing empty buildings, unlighted park ing lots, for making money escorts and that ty pe of thing. Let’s Do It Again!
