M graduate student and mother
15-year-old boy.
She said her grades often suffer
such conflicts.
"It’s hard to find a balance when

Because she is a single parent,

“If the dishes sit out for four days
straight and we run out, it doesn’t
bother me,” Pappas said. “I don’t
feel guilty about having a messy
house. We just wait and clean it up
on the weekends.”
As a young mother of three
put it, “If I had to worry about keep
ing a clean house I’d go crazy. We
pick up the big pieces but leave the
rest.”
Raising young children also re
stricts a mother s participation in
outside school activities. Before
going to a Midnight Yell Practice,
Town Hall concert, club meeting,
political speech, basketball game or
movie, the mother must first find a
babysitter. And babysitters cost
money, which causes most of the
entertainment to center around
quiet evenings at home and Home
Box Office movies on television.
