Representative Area III Thursday Oct. 27 Pd. Political Ad By MARK POWER Highly detailed maps will be at the disposal of all visitors to the Bryan-College Station area in area motels, eourtesy of the College Sta tion City Council. In regular session Wednesday af ternoon, the council approved with some reservation the design for a new area map. It had appropriated $1,700 to the joint venture with area businessmen that will provide maps in all participating motels and money lending institutions. Mayor Lorence Bravenec said the map did not fairly represent the transportation industry in College Station. Bravenec contended that the map over-emphasized the importance of the Coulter airfield versus Easter- wood, and omitted the Greyhound Bus Terminal in College Station. Henry Hawley, representing the Chamber of Commerce agreed to add the terminal locations to the map, but said the desienali* Coulter Field had to remainf« map to be accurate. Bravenec then asked Chamber of Commerce reprt, tive was aware that the ‘WeW Bryan’ sign recently erectedk Chamber was within Collegi tion city limits and did notco to the city’s sign ordinance. “1 was not aware that situation,” Hawley said in resp 1 to the allegations. “I will cert look into this matter.” In other business, thecoutnii proved a contract for grave-opes services at the city cemetery,i proved three final plats for snij sion construction and realty si and postponed until tody’s nw I 7 consideration of an ordinance (piiring motorcyclists to wearl mets within city limits. The com will meet in regular session toji at 7:30 in the council ehambcn City Hall. % ml* «sl» it* •X* «A* oX*sL* ***** ***** ***** jC -T- 0 T* •T* Elephant hunters mt rockets and grass fm United Press International JOHANNESBURG,South Africa — The methods range from shoot ing them with rockets to burning them to death in huge grass fires. Wildlife conservationists say ivory hunters killed between 100,000 and 400,000 elephants in 1976 in Africa, threatening to send the majestic creature the same route to extinc tion as the blue whale. herd, said Douglas-Hamilton, is based in Kenya. “In all Africa, ivory leaving 1976 may have come from an\1 between 100,000 and 40§ elephants and there seems tol letup in the demand,” he said Iain Douglas-Hamilton, an inter national authority on elephants, told the World Wilderness Congress Tuesday that something must be done to cheek the demand for ivory to protect the elephant. Douglas-Hamilton said that in Chad, on the southern fringe of the Sahara, there were reports the army had used rockets to fire at elephants from helicopters in the race to feed the world ivory market. "In Sudan I have received very recent reports that some tribes are still burning elephants to death by setting alight the long grass around a Douglas-Hamilton said he am at the figures "after weigl thousands of tusks in Dar Salaam’s (Tanzania) weigli rooms. ” He said the estimate w correct if the tusks weighed ia Es Salaam “were representaliu tusks all over the continent.
