THE BATTALION FRIDAY, OCTOBER 14, 1977 Page 7 Another change for Bears ;s and earn of the five to by Dick Well r By MARK PATTERSON , Battalion Staff [avlor head coach Grant Tcaff has led freshman Scott Smith as his ling cjuarterback for tomorrow’s ie against the Aggies, mith, in his first year at Baylor of Dallas Highland Park High look beat out sophomore Greg 0 d for the starting position solely this week’s performance. [Based on this week’s work in Lee Scott has looked better than )0 d,”Teaff said. “Not only has he ■euted the plays better, be has •ked very well with the first team ■nse.’ eafl has been confronted with a irterback problem since bis ter, Sammy Bickham, was lost for the season with a knee injury. Teaff has adjusted bis game plan to fit Bickham’s replacement. Sammy was obviously our best cjuarterback in both execution and juassing,” Teaff said. “Scott doesn’t throw as well as Sammy does so our offensive play will have to adjust ac cordingly. Our passing game will suffer the most without Sammy.” The starting nod tomorrow it in no way assures him of remaining the number one quarterback. If Scott does well against the Ag gies he will remain our starting quarterback, ” Teaff said. “If his per formance' is poor we ll have to go with Greg Wood and hope he can step in and do the job for us.” While Teaff and the offense worry about the cjuarterback position, Jim Elan, defensive secondary coach, is all smiles about the j^lay of the de fensive backs. After five games the Bears lead the Southwest Confer ence in passing defense. In 81 pass ing attemjTts, the opposition has completed only 31 passes for a 36 percent completion rate and an av erage of 70.6 yards per game. Challenging the Baylor secondary will be the A&M j^assing offense which is last in the conference in passing offense with a 66-yard per game average. Baylor punter Luke Prestridge has moved into the number three spot in the conference punting race. On the year Prestridge has punted 31 times and carries a 44-yard aver- Conference notes. my the Sodal Di s a big I’m often ask; I dance review | 1. dents) don’ll dance class, he Social Di her to learnUi ;‘s than from ig, now callei erformed wi ultaneouslyii Dressing it, style, and: ■s. ial dancing bn ig, the oldest: influence isi mpo of them ive tempo res hile a heavily tempo results ns vary acco: s played and ne elementsd ue dances ly developed formed as ri arid death. 1 is not the! acing. -eturning det icing, more udingtheUni tuthern Metk) ding courses si al Dance toll O.D. IR THE TELEPHONE 846-3754 DED. e ?d The Southwest Conference hiked its non conference record to 16-9 with a pair of victories Saturday. All that’s left are two games Oct. 22, Air Force at Baylor and Miami (Fla.) at TCU. A sweep of those would jiut the SWC at 18-9, its best extra curricular mark since the same won-loss record was achieved in 1963. The SWC is 3-0 against the W estern Athletic Conference, 2-0 against both the Atlantic (.’oast and Missouri Valley, 1-0 against the Big Eight, 3-2 against independents, 1-2 against both the South eastern and Pacific Eight and 0-2 against the Big Ten. Field goals accounted for 39 of the 142 points scored in games involving the SWC.’ last Saturday. Texas and Oklahoma each scored two in the 13-6 Longhorn win. But if they’d both punted, you’ve had really seen some punting yardage. As it was, Texas’ Russell Erxleben and OU’s Uwe von Schamann jxmted tin* ball for 794 yards. They also attempted field goals of 69, 64, 63, 58 and 47 yards. If their coaches hadn’t been so confident of the kic kers ability, the game could have had more than 1,0()() yards of punts. Oklahoma’s roster for the Texas game included 23 players from the state of Oklahoma and 24 from Texas. Longhorn quarterbacks Mark McBath and Jon Aune went out with leg injuries in Texas’ first 12 offensive plays. Then in the second quarter, OU quai ter back Thomas Lott of San Antonio was in jured and missed a few [days. As Lott was helped off the* field, Texas sports information director Jones Ramsey observed, “That’s the third quarterback from Texas injured today.” SWC INDIVIDUAL STATISTICS THRU OCT. 8 TOTAL OFFENSE Team Arkansas Texas Houston A&M TCU Tech SMU Baylor Rice Plavs 272 301 293 288 389 352 334 338 344 HIGH GAME: 617, Texas (Rice) Yds. 1800 1793 1525 1291 1586 1582 1461 1347 1252 TD 21 23 13 9 11 15 1 1 RUSHING DEFENSE Game Avg. 450.0 448.2 381.2 322.7 317.2 316.4 292.2 269.4 250.4 Game Team G Plays Yds.
