ports Ags ready for Bears By MARK PATTERSON ■After a two week vaeation from ■uthwest Conference play the Ag- ■e S retain to action Saturday to face ■e Baylor Bears in Waco. Kick-off ■ lit 4 p.m. ■ lead by all-America candidate Ron Burns at strong safty, the Bears T V e compiled a 2-3 overall record U s taad 1-2 in Southwest confer- eniv play. JBaylor is coming oft ot a hard ■night 9-6 victory over SMU Satur- ■v night. Though the Bears needed ■ewin, the victory was costly as the ■ammy Bickham, the Bears ■umber one quarterback, suffered a strained knee and is listed as a ■oubtftd starter for hte A6cM game. M Bickham's backup is sophomore Greg Wood. Wood went into spring training as the Bears number one quarterback, because Bickham sat out spring drills to pitch on the baseball team. But Wood will get his chance Saturday if Bickham’s knee prevents him from seeing ac tion. Saturday’s game marks the seventy-fourth meeting between the two schools. The Aggies hold an overall advantage in the the series w ith 43 wins against 23 losses with 7 ties. One of the Aggie wins canrie last year when the Aggies shut out the Bears 24-0. The game belonged to Tony Franklin as he kicked a 64- yard field goal and his record- breaking 65-yard field goal to lead the Aggies to the victory. Six players off the 1976 Baylor team were taken in the pro draft, all being chosen in the first eight rounds. Among those being selected were all-American defensive back Gary Green, chosen in the first round by Kansas City, offensive tackle Gary Gregory, chosen in the fifth round by the New York Jets, and running back Cleve Franklin, chosen in the eighth round by Philidelphia. The Bears have nine starters re turning from last year’s 7-3-1 team. Five defensive starters return led by Burns, chosen All-Southwest Conference last year, and Scooter Reed, a three year letterman at comer back. Inside, Gaiy Hutchi son, a two year letterman at left tackle, solidifies the defensive line. On offense, the line is anchored by right guard Jon Kramer, a three year letterman who head coach Grant Teaflf says, “is the best offen sive lineman I’ve seen in four years of coaching post-season all-star games.’’ Complimented on the outside by split end Tommy Davidson and tight end Ronnie Lee, both two year letterman, the Bears have the po tential for an explosive and exciting offense for Saturday’s game.
