Inexperience is not affecting the
Texas A&M water polo team too
much. The Aggies raised their sea
sonal record to 7-3 by defeating the
SMU Mustangs 11-7.
“We played as a team much bet
ter than any game so far,” coach
Dennis Fosdick said. “Our offense
was a little weak at times, but the
guys did do a good job.”
The leading scorers for the Ags
were co-captains Steve Sampson
and Bob Leland with three points
each. Greg Meek and Scott Harris
each had two goals, while Mike
Newsome rounded out the scoring
with one goal.
“Leland and Meek played real
well,” Fosdick said. “Meek is just
getting used to playing where he is
supposed to. The Mustangs are our
toughest competition in Texas. They
have a real strong ball club. They
will be tough when we play them
here.
ming pool.
"The water was extremely cold,”
Fosdick said. “We think it was about
75 degrees, and that is very cold for
polo. Our pool will be a lot more
pleasant for them.”
The Ags have the rest of the week
off, while the women’s water polo
team opens its season in San An
tonio this weekend. The tourna
ment will be held at Alamo Heights
High School.
The second toughest competitor
for the Aggies was the SMU swim-

Fred Akers raised the chief ques- 1
tion.
“I wonder what Shepard's eligibil
ity status is?” asked Akers.
The answer, of course, was that
Shepard’s eligibility was not affected
by the NCAA ruling.
The NCAA merely forbid the
Cougars from participating in a howl
game after the current season and
will keep them from appearing on
television next season. But Shepard,
whom the NCAA said was given an
inducement to attend Houston in
the form of a hank loan, was not
mentioned in the punishment sec
tion of the decree.
And that may be the end of it.
But the Southwest Conference
has been investigating the Shepard
matter as well and its report could
be issued at the league s annual
winter meeting.
