The Aggies raised their sea sonal record to 7-3 by defeating the SMU Mustangs 11-7. “We played as a team much bet ter than any game so far,” coach Dennis Fosdick said. “Our offense was a little weak at times, but the guys did do a good job.” The leading scorers for the Ags were co-captains Steve Sampson and Bob Leland with three points each. Greg Meek and Scott Harris each had two goals, while Mike Newsome rounded out the scoring with one goal. “Leland and Meek played real well,” Fosdick said. “Meek is just getting used to playing where he is supposed to. The Mustangs are our toughest competition in Texas. They have a real strong ball club. They will be tough when we play them here. ming pool. "The water was extremely cold,” Fosdick said. “We think it was about 75 degrees, and that is very cold for polo. Our pool will be a lot more pleasant for them.” The Ags have the rest of the week off, while the women’s water polo team opens its season in San An tonio this weekend. The tourna ment will be held at Alamo Heights High School. The second toughest competitor for the Aggies was the SMU swim- Sailing team takes third place at Tulane The Texas A&M sailing team re turned home from the Tulane In vitational Regatta with a third place trophy. The tournament was held on Lake Ponchartrain in New Or leans. The Aggies defeated the other sailing teams from the southwest. The regatta, sponsored by Southeast Intercollegiate Sailing Association, was won by Tulane University. Florida State finished second, with the Aggies finishing a close third. The Ags were followed by Texas and Baylor. Rice and the Uni versity of Dallas did not show. Skippering for A&M was Kevin Fuller and Greg Schertz. Terry Gough, Julann Chiles and Bill Wightman were their crews. Fuller and Schertz combined their scores from ten races. The Aggie duo raced on Olympic Gold Cup courses. The winds were clocked at 15 knots. A&M coach Randy Davis was pleased with his team’s perform ance. The Aggies’ regatta will be the SEISA Sloop Eliminations, sailed in Solings. It will be hosted by Rice and Texas. The NCAA merely forbid the Cougars from participating in a howl game after the current season and will keep them from appearing on television next season. But Shepard, whom the NCAA said was given an inducement to attend Houston in the form of a hank loan, was not mentioned in the punishment sec tion of the decree. And that may be the end of it.
