Denson, the first defense witness, and former officer Stephen Orlando, 21, are accused of murdering Torres May 6 after a barroom disturbance arrest. Three other officers also were fired. Former officers Glenn Brinkmeyer and Louis Kinney were granted immunity for testifying and said Denson and Orlando helped beat Torres to “educate’ him and that Denson pushed him off a 16- foot bayou ledge. Denson stepped from the witness box and re-enacted for the jury how he held Torres at the edge. Denson said Torres lurched and leaped into the water. “Did you push him into the bayou?” defense attorney Bob Ben nett asked. “No, sir. I didn’t,” Denson said. Denson said he made no attempt to help Torres from the water be cause he thought Torres “was in full control. He said Torres was swimming on his back when he yelled up at police, “You’re not going to shoot me, are you? Denson said he re plied, ‘No, you’ve gotten away. You’re free to go. Denson said he did not realize it was Torres who had been found in the bayou two days later. “I don’t feel it was my conduct that resulted in his death. It didn’t dawn on me it could possibly he (Torres, when Denson saw televi sion reports). “I had no inclination at all that this was going to happen,’ Denson said. “I was just going to take him down there and scare him and see if he was going to straighten up and let him go about his business. Denson said rowdies arrested on drunkenness or disturbance com plaints often were taken to secluded spots to be calmed down. He said the drunks usually “apologize after such handling and often are not taken to jail. Last Week Harris County Medical Examiner Joseph Jachimezyk tes tified Torres was too drunk and encumbered by heavy boots and other clothing to swim after the beatine. Rapist walks away from jail United Press International HOUSTON — A convicted rapist sentenced to life imprisonment ap parently walked away from the downtown jail unchallenged, Harris County County Sheriff’s deputies said Tuesday. Daniel K. Johnson, 32, convicted Friday of raping a 24-year-old air line stewardess April 14, was sen tenced Monday in District Judge Joe Kegan’s court, taken to jail and then disappeared. Deputies said Johnson, unshack led and dressed in civilian clothes, apparently took advantage of jail booking area crowding and de puties shift change to walk out of the jail unnoticed. “There were probably 60 or 70 prisoners in there in the hallway,’ \Maj. Bob Breckenridge said. “Because of the high traffic in the booking area and because it was a shift change, there’s a strong indica tion he blended in with others in his street clothes and walked out the door.” Breckenridge said Johnson also is wanted under a different name in Illinois on charges of rape, burglary and escaping from jail in 1974.
