Sports Editor Aggie cancers returned from Dal las with a parcel of trophies with Kay Edwards winning the Dallas Cup as the top individual competitor as the Aggies dominated the second annual Elm Fork Flatwater Festival. Edwards took firsts in the wo men’s kayak in both the downriver and slalom races. She teamed with Trevi Holt to win the women’s fiberglass and backwards races. She took second in the mixed fiberglass race with partner with John Bugge arid a third in the C-l (one-man or woman) event. The Aggie racers, not to be con fused with the Texas A&M Canoe Club, came home with most of the awards as A&M competitors finished second, third and fourth to Edwards in the individual race for the Dallas Cup. Mike Shively was second with 39 points to only three behind Ed wards. Shively got his points with a first in the men’s aluminum, seconds in men’s C-l and men’s backwards, and thirds in men’s kayak, mixed fiberglass and men’s fiberglass. Holt was third in the individual standings with 34 points. She took wins in the women’s backwards, C-l and fiberglass events, adding a sec ond in the downriver kayak and a third in the mixed fiberglass to her score. Bugge teamed with Shively to win the men’s aluminum, a 21-mile race. He also took seconds in the mixed fiberglass and men’s fiberglass and a couple of thirds in men’s fiberglass and men’s C-l. Bugge and Shively’s win in the men’s aluminum was no easy feat as they had only hours earlier com pleted another 21-mile race, taking third in the men’s fiberglass. To aid their stamina the two drank a mixture of honey and vodka. “It was awfully bot,” Shively said. “The heat of the day hurt a couple of the teams who were short on water. You get to where that’s all you think about. ” The Dallas Downriver Club spon sored the races held on the Elm Fork portion of the Trinity River. The Dallas races were also for state points which go towards de termining the eventual state cham pion. Edwards leads the state in the fiberglass (with Holt), kayak and aluminum (also with Holt) events. Bugge and Shively head the men’s aluminum class while Shively and Holt are the state leaders in the mixed category. The next race for the Aggies will be Sept. 17 at San Marcos. Holmes Dennard Dickey Notes. . . . k The Texas A&M kicking game shows no signs of faltering from last season’s performance and all indications show probable im provement. Place kicker Tony Franklin, the NCAA record hold s' with a 65-yard field goal last all, has kicked 75-yarders during practice. Punter David Appleby, ivho averaged 39.7 yards per )oot last year, is currently av- saging 44 yards a kick during fall drills.. . .Sophomore Doug Holmes, who recently beat out Thomas Gregory for the starting iffensive right guard spot, is the /ounger brother of Ernie iolmes, defensive lineman for he Pittsburgh Steelers.. . .The Upcoming Kansas game may well rase Texas A&M’s attendance nark at Kyle Field for a non- :onference game. The record is 10,027 set at last year’s A&M- (ansas State contest.. . . Offen- ive tackle Frank Myers and enter Mark Dennard were amed to the all-South squad by outhern Living magazine.. . . ansas fullback Bill Campfield is lefinitely out of Saturday’s game :er suffering a hyperextended during practice. He will be eplaced by either sophomore [Bobby Barrow or junior Max Ediger. . .. Aggie running backs Curtis Dickey and George Woodard have set a goal of 1,500 yards rushing apiece for this sea son. If accomplished, both will have broken Texas A&M’s old single season rushing mark of 1,302 yards by Bob Smith in 1950.. . . Should defensive end Eugene Sanders regain his start ing status, he will join corner- back Jimmy Hamilton to form a duo from West Jefferson High of •New Orleans.. . .Appleby has nothing but praise for new deep snapper Don Wright. “He just doesn’t make a bad snap,” Appleby said of the man respon sible for getting the ball to him.. . .Converted halfback Darrell Smith is enjoying him self at his new position of split end. “I just love split end,” he said. “David Walker is throwing the football better. It’s a very catchable pass that he throws.”. . . .James Zachry, on making the switch from linebacker to defensive tackle. “I’m not as big as most defensive tackles so I have to rely on quick ness and speed. The most dif ficult thing to learn, for me, is getting off fast on the pass rush. ”. . . .There is another Pardee now connected with the Aggie football team, Steve Par dee, son of former A&M great Jack. The elder Pardee is now coaching the Chicago Bears in the NFL. Steve is a student manager for the A&M gridders. “Coaching and practices are about the same in college and pros,” he says, “The big differ ence is the food. The quantity is about the same, but the cooks at A&M are the greatest. I’ve never had such tasty food.”. . . .The’ last time the Aggies and Jayhawks met was in 1974 when Kansas handed Texas A&M a 28-10 defeat. The Aggies went into that game ranked as the No. 4 team in the nation. This year the Aggies have again been given a Top Ten rating by the pre- seaison experts, with some pre dicting as high as fourth. Strange irony?.. . . George Woodard weighed in at 265 lbs., making him as large, if not larger, than any player in the Kansas defen sive line.. . .Aggie halfbacks Adger Armstrong and David Brothers will alternate after each play this Saturday to serve as messengers for Coach Emory Bellard. The two will bring the plays in to quarterback David Walker. > & M c Laughlin's of corpus christi ^.^ ■ jfllll .AIR ClLAjfJf have joined together to provide the finest hair styling in Bryan/College Station. In a season where they have almost nothing else to be happy about, the last- place Mets are completely ecstatic over their shy but affable 24-year- old left fielder, one of the four players they got for Seaver from the Reds. From the first day he reported to the Mets in mid-June (he heard about the deal on the radio while showering after a ball game in In dianapolis), Henderson began win ning over everybody, not only by the natural way he played ball but also by the natural way he did ev erything else. “It’s funny to sit here and listen to them interview him,” says third baseman Lenny Randle, who has the Shea Stadium locker next to Henderson. “You can’t help hear his answers and they’re all so ... so ... innocent.” That’s the perfect word, inno cent. Steve Henderson is so unspoiled and does everything so naturally, minus any fuss, that without even consciously trying he invariably in vites comparison with Willie Mays, when he first came up to the Giants. Mays notices the obvious parallel himself. The Mets’ 6-1, 187-pound speedster never has had any kind of real slump since coming up to the big leagues from Indianapolis, where he was hitting .323. In 74 games with the Mets, he’s hitting .314 with 48 RBI and 11 homers. Five different times he has won games with his hits. “People ask me how I feel about the deal,” he says. “I tell them I feel goyd being in the major leagues, have no complaints and was real surprised being involved in a trade for someone like Tom Seaver.” WHEN THINGS GET YOU DOWN . . .
