Gen. rl Rudder’s 2nd Ranger Battalion ogized him Thursday as tough, elligent and “determined to fol- through on any assignment” ring special ceremonies at his ive just south of the Texas A&M liversity campus where he was :ef officer for 11 years. He exemplified the co-called nger mystique,” said James W. ;e” Eikner of Austin, president of Rudder chapter of the national nger Battalions Association. "We shouldn’t be somber. We ruld be happy for having known is man,” added NRB president G. McKinnon of Houston. About 100 Ranger veterans and dr families made the trip to Col- e Station prior to the start of the ional Ranger reunion in Houston is weekend. Most were from idder’s famed 2nd Battalion which de a daring assault on German sitions atop 100-foot cliffs at irmandy on D-Day. Earl Rudder looked on his Ranger experience as one of the most rewarding in his life,” Eikner said. “It is fitting that we come to rededicate this soil and honor our former commander. ” Mrs. Margaret Rudder, his widow, placed one of two wreaths at graveside and announced that a civic group at Pointe du Hoc, France, where the D-Day assault took place, was at that very moment holding a similar memorial service. Other portions of the ceremonial included a color guard from the 49th Armored Division and a fly-by of jets from the Texas Air National Guard. Eikner, recalling the decorations Rudder had received in war, noted that he had been outstanding also as a citizen, husband and father. Rudder, a native of Eden and former mayor of Brady, came to Texas A&M in 1958 as vice presi dent after a three-year term as Texas Land Commissioner. In 1959, he was appointed presi dent of the university and was cho sen for the post of president of The Texas A&M University System in 1965, the office he held at the time of his death on March 23, 1970. Thursday’s ceremony marked the first time many of the Rangers pres ent had been able to visit Rudder’s grave. Eikner explained that that fact and the proximity of the na tional convention prompted the project. MEMBER AMERICAN GEM SOCIETY There IS a difference!!! iou, Rto can ride cheaper. mr than one. The nation’s search for energy is pushing drillers deeper and deeper into the earth where they run into a dangerous foe called the “sour gas well.” Exxon and Texas A&M Univer sity’s Nuclear Science Center are joining forces on this problem which plagues the oilfields of Texas, Florida, Alabama and Mississippi. These wells come in at 16,000 to 17,000 feet with a combination of high temperatures, pressure and acid levels which can cause failure of steel tubing by erosion in a rela tively short time. “Once these pipes fail, it take about $5 million to fish the old pipe out and replace it,” explained Dr. John Randall, head of the center and a principal investigator on the project. “The solution that we at Texas A&M have proposed is the incorpo ration on a non-radioactive trace material into the tubing in the well,” he said. “As it corrodes, the tracer goes into the fluids coming out of the well. ’’ iV Back-tQ-SrittmfV Batktd-lkhuiji 1 mm oqer Discount Imniii/CenM V Back-to-Schmri* / V Eack-to-SrinmfV BacktoSchtmf^►fiackio-Sctitml^’ GRAND OPENING KROGERS MEZZANINE BACK TO CAMPUS HEADQUARTERS 2104 Texas Avenue Open 24 hours a day CASUAL FASHIONS for GUYS & GALS TOP DRAWER Culpepper Plaza RENTALS: low rates for all rivers SALES: Aluminum & ABS Canoes Maps, Paddles, Eureka Tents Camp Trails Backpacks Also your TEXAS CANOE TRAILS rental agent for canoe, kayak, raft rentals on the GUADALUPE RIVER.
