Page 6 THE BATTALION WEDNESDAY, JUNE 1, 1977 Hanafi terrorist trial begins United Press International WASHINGTON — The murder- kidnap trial of 12 Hanafi Muslims charged in the March takeover of three buildings began in a packed courtroom yesterday amid tight security. Superior Court Judge Nicholas Nunzio quickly dismissed a defense motion that the government inter fered with questioning of witnesses by the defense. Questioning of prospective jurors was expected to begin Wednesday and the trial of Hanafi leader Hamaas Abdul Khaalis and his fol lowers could take two months. They were accused of killing a radio station reporter and taking 149 hostages in a three-day siege which ended peacefully. Nunzio clashed with the defense attorney, Harry Alexander, a former superior court judge who represents Khaalis. Nunzio sustained more than 50 objections by the government to de fense questioning. “I have ruled. I have ruled,” Nunzio repeatedly told Alexander and other defense attorneys when they complained about the proceed ings. The 12 defendants sat on one side of an L-shaped table, with their at torneys on the other side. This brought strenuous objections from the defense, but to no avail. More than a dozen federal marsh als were present. Reporters and spectators had to walk through metal detectors to get in. When Khaalis, dressed in a blue denim outfit, entered the court room he waved to more than 20 fol lowers seated in the audience. He was saluted by several women who had their faces covered in tra ditional Muslim fashion. His 11 followers, indicted with Khaalis May 4, could have been tried later, but in a show of unity last week they overrode motions by their court-appointed lawyers that they be tried separately. More motions were planned for the first two days of the trial with jury selection to follow, probably Wednesday. Twelve jurors and 12 alternates, to be sequestered throughout the trial, are to be selected from an in itial pool of 650 jurors. They will be screened on the basis of their an swers to a questionnaire about pre trial publicity, possible prejudice and ability to sit on a sequestered panel. Metal detectors were used to search persons both as they entered the D.C. Superior Court building and again as they entered the court room. The courtroom was renovated for tighter security before the 1974 trial of five of six men charged with the death of seven of Khaalis’ family members. During the siege, Khaalis de manded to see the man charged with the murders so he could mete out his own punishment, but that demand was not met. Also beginning Saturday is a two- day clinical bacteriology and mycol ogy workshop taught by Dr. Russell B. Simpson. It runs 9-5 Saturday and concludes at 1 p.m. Sunday. The courtroom was remodeled to accommodate the 12 defendants and their lawyers. Two of the 12 asked to defend themselves, but Judge Nicholas S. Nunzio said the court- appointed attorneys should con tinue on the case for guidance. The blood cells act as a blood defense mechania against infection. Biology graduate student Steve Menii took this microscope picture, magnified 20,000x, at A&M’s Electron Microscopy Center. Carried by the Tsetj fly, the disease has stranded parts of central Africa m nomically with its potentially fatal infection. The third program is a clinical pathology seminar on interpretation of the leukogram in dogs and cats. Instructor Dr. John P. McGrath said it lasts 9-5 Sunday. Part of a nationwide network of continuing education for veterinari ans, assistants, health officials and livestock producers, the workshops award both continuing education units and hourly equivalents recog nized by some scientific academies. Khaalis hired a colorful, out spoken former Superior Court judge, Harry T. Alexander, who re tained his title after resigning from the bench. He had demanded to be called judge in the courtroom, but Nunzio ruled it would be wrong to call him a judge in front of the jury. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Martin J. Linsky and Mark H. Tuohey III predicted the trial would last from one to two months.
