The students were selected by the Student Awards Committee the College to receive Out standing Student Awards in rec ognition of their scholarship and extra-curricular activities. A re cipient must have a minimum grade point ratio of 3.25 and be a December, May or August graduate. Dr. Earl Cook, dean of the Col lege of Geosciences, presented certificates to: Barbara Butler of Texas City, James Davis of Fort Worth and James Deaconson of Mt. Morris, Ill., all majoring in meteorology; Patricia Grothouse of Houston, majoring in geophysics; James Jones of Sour Lake, majoring in geology; Janet Koehler of San Antonio, majoring in geography; Roberta Marsh- ment of Dayton, Ohio, majoring in meteorology, and Christine Warren of Alhambra, Calif., majoring in geophysics. Winners of the Thomas S. Gathright awards for the senior, junior and sophomore students in each college who have the high est grade point ratio for their class were also announced. This year’s winners in the Col lege of Geosciences were: Senior Patricia Grothouse; junior Grace M. Chen, meteorology major from Kowloon, Hong Kong, and sophomore Bonny McWhorter, geophysics major from Houston. A&M graduates promoted, lauded Three U.S. Air Force officers who were commissioned at Texas A&M University have been hon ored for their work. Capt. Clifford D. Sassman of Falfurrias, 1st Lt. Donald J. Eg- linton of Aptos, Calif., and 2nd Lt. Albert F. Burnett of San An tonio received awards or made career advances. Capt. Sassman, varsity tennis captain before graduation in 1966, graduated from instrument pilot instructor school at Ran dolph AFB. An aerospace engineering major at A&M, Sassman will re turn to Kelly AFB for duty with an Air Force Logistics Command unit. Lt. Eglinton received the Air Force Commendation Medal. The 1974 graduate Was cited for achievement as flight officer in charge of the Seymour Johnson AFB, N.C., honor guard. Eglin ton serves as civil engineering of ficer with a Tactical Air Com mand unit at the base. Lt. Burnett completed training in a supply operations officer course at Lowry AFB, Colo. The 1976 graduate was trained in ma terial control by electronic data processing. He will be stationed at Bergstrom AFB with a TAG unit. Eglinton and Burnett were in Squadron 1 of the Corps of Cadets as A&M undergraduates. Sassman was executive officer of Squadron 16. All three were commissioned through the AF- ROTC program.
