It hasn’t worked out that way. The Pirates have more speed and defense than in recent seasons, but they still score runs in bunches and look every bit as tough offensively as in the past. And now, last night’s 8-7, 11- inning triumph over the Atlanta Braves, has moved them into first place in the East. The Braves, meanwhile, have lost 10 straight games. Right fielder Dave Parker led the Pirates’ 12-hit attack with two hom ers and a single and drove in three runs. The Braves tied the score in the seventh inning on a two-run homer by Jeff Burroughs, but the Pirates won the game in the 11th with the winning run scoring on a sacrifice fly by Ed Kirkpatrick. Kent Tekulve, who shut out the Braves in the ninth and 10th in nings, received credit for his second victory while Phil Niekro, who went the distance, suffered his fifth loss without a win. right-hander who notched his first major league victory last night with a 6-2 decision over the Toronto Blue Jays.
