Speaker Clayton honored in House THE BATTALION TUESDAY, MAY 3, 1977 Page 11 AUSTIN-Brief ceremonies yes terday honoring House Speaker Bill Clayton were a blend of humility, charity, low-key remarks and the dredging of a few bad memories. Clayton, a Panhandle farmer who hopes to become the first three- term House speaker in the state s history, declined an opportunity to address the House and announced in t advance he would not accept the lavish gifts customary on past speaker’s days. He said any contributions would be divided between Cal Farley’s Boys Ranch and Girlstown, both of which are in his West Texas Dis trict. Former speakers attending the ceremonies were Robert S. Calvert, Homer Leonard, Price Daniel Sr., Claude Gilmer, Durwood Manford, Rueben Senterfitt, Waggoner Carr, Byron Tunnell, Gus Mutscher, Rayford Price and Price Daniel Jr. The House adopted resolutions honoring each of the former speak ers, although there were scattered shouts of dissent at the proposal honoring Mutscher, who resigned the office after his conviction for conspiring to accept a bribe in con nection with the Sharpstown scan dal. During the ceremonies Clayton was presented a leather-bound vol ume containing the House resolu tion proclaiming the special day in his honor and parchment sheets signed by the 149 other House members. Clayton was introduced by Speaker Pro Tern Richard Slack. nt years i, CamW ‘lations.il ver. iy thatCj w power i is. The EnergyCycle has a “Work- presen se” conversion unit that enables internal combustion — I’m comfort able with that idea,” Rodale said. “It’s the one form of power that can’t be hurt by a ‘blackout,’ it costs no thing, and it’s good for you.” The firm has sold more than 50 of the EnergyCycles for about $289 each. The Mechanical Mule costs about $300 for both winch and plow. “The Mormons, who place great emphasis on self-reliance, have pur chased several of the EnergyCycles and have been experimenting with the Mechanical Mule,” Rodale said. He said the Workhorse energy converter has been used for milling flour, chopping and blending and to power small lathes, drill presses, saws and other tools. “Because of its muscular energy conversion efficiencv, Rodale said, “the EnergyCycle makes the usep- more productive.” ( “For example, enough flour for six loaves of bread can be milled in just 20 minutes, where it would take sev eral hours with a hand crank.” “Also, you can do your chores and have both hands free for other work, or for reading.” Rodale Press, Inc., a private com pany, does not release a financial statement, but Rodale said, “while we make money, we don’t need a great deal. Our philosophy is to use our profits for research into making better use of what we have.” “And muscle power is one of the things we have.” zx KWWKMACK iSmvts WWW' /A dried ^ silk flowers ; min‘» .booQ>o<2.t-S ZX.—CE: EAST 2%i STREET WAREHOUSE 3715 EtoT Z^th STREET (7I1) 8<Ko-4>T7l TOWN ?
