Students were granted 5,643 scholarships and 2,960 loans through the Student Fi nancial Aid Office located in Room 303 of the YMCA Building. According to the Texas A&M catalogue, Valedictory Scholarships and Opportunity Awards are limited to entering freshmen and granted for their first year at A&M. The President’s Scholar Award and Academic Achievement Schol arships are also granted to freshmen on a four-year basis. All freshmen scholarships are based on high school academic performance. R.M. Logan, director of student financial aid, said there are about 115 Spring Award Scholarships granted annually to upperclassmen. The Junior College Merit Award Scholarships are designed to encourage outstanding students to transfer to A&M. There are be tween 25 and 30 awarded each year. These scholarships are based on academic achievement. Logan said the Duffie Award grants $500 to seniors during their senior year who have worked their way through school. Senior engineers are eligible for the ALCOA Award ($750), which is based on extra-curricular activities and leadership, as well as academics. Students without a high GPR may also request financial aid. Parents of students seeking finan cial aid, submit a need-analysis re port, or. Parents Confidential Statement, while independent stu dents must complete a financial aid form. These analyses are sent to the College of Scholarship Service in Berkley, Calif., which evaluate the student’s need and suggests eligible students. Logan said that family size, par ents’ salary and expenses are taken into consideration when financial need is decided. Financial aid includes grants-in- aid, loans and student part-time employment. Athletic and ROTC scholarships are included in the grants. Texas A&M participates in long term loans such as the Hinson- Hazlewood College Student Loan. In 1968, Texas was authorized to sell $85 million in bonds to fund the program. Students can borrow $1,500 each academic year, but the total amount may not exceed $7,500. The loan should be repaid after graduation. The Federally Insured Loans, the National Direct Student Loan Fi gram and Short-term Emergei Loan Programs are also availabli students. Logan said the National Dirf Student Loan is popular because has a three per cent interest rate Funds for financial aid come various accounts, including Supplemental Education Oppoi nity Grant Fund funded by Federal government, and theStal Student Incentive Grant, which funded by the Federal and stal governments.
