He has already competed in two minor meets this month and has carted away two first place finishes with throws of 197 feet and 199 feet, 8 inches. “I’ve developed a comprehensive program for myself which puts equal stress on weight training and flexibility,” explained the 6-foot-4, 270-poimd Oerter. “When I origi nally started last year, I planned to continue with the program through this summer but I’ve rounded into shape sooner than I thought I would. “I hadn’t planned to compete this year, but I’m at a point now when it’s the best thing for me.” It might also be the best thing for the Kansas Relays because meet of ficials expect a crowd between 12,000 and 15,000, weather permit ting. Oerter will be one of several gate attractions. There will also be six members of the 1976 U.S. Olympic team, in cluding Texas freshman Johnny Jones who ran a 9.85 in the 100 meters two weeks ago at the Texas Relays, only to have the time washed out because of a faulty elec tronic timer. Also competing will be Olympic pole vaulters Earl Bell and Terry Porter, Olympic distance runner Garry Bjorklund formerly of the University of Minnesota, and sub- four minute milers Mike Slack and Mike Manke. The meet, the second jewel in the Midwest Triple Crown, will run from Thursday through Saturday. Most of the athletes will then head for Des Moines next weekend for the third leg of the Triple Crown, the Drake Relays.
