The AP quoted Bellard as saying,
“The only problem Darrell has is his
inability to accept the integrity of
other people. Somewhere along the
line he got an idea that he was the
only person in the world that’s hon
est and forthright and just.”
But Bellard said yesterday that
his statements were not anything
personal.
He said there is “a difference of
opinion between me and Coach
Royal,” on recruiting violations.
I don't believe that all colleges
are going out of their way to break
the rules,” Bellard said. “Rules are
broken, but mostly through
technicalities and because the rules
are so complex, Bellard said.
I think that’s true of most all
universities. There are some schools
that contradict that, but they are
isolated cases.”
When Bellard worked for Royal at
Texas, they put together the
wishbone-T offense before Bellard
came to Texas A&M five years ago.
Royal retired from coaching last fall
after 20 years UT.
