Grobe leads Ags against Bears
By STEVE MARTAINDALE
Buddy Grobe in his fourth year
of college baseball, has participated
in the National Collegiate Athletic
Association playoffs and has spent
two years as a leader at Texas A&M.
But the highest point of his baseball
career was in high school.
In 1973, Grobe and his team
mates at LaGrange High School
won the Texas state championship
for Class AAA schools.
“That would have to be the high
point of my baseball career,” the
moustached second baseman said.
“I’ve had some good times playing
college baseball. But, I’d rank win
ning state with winning the College
World Series. That’s what you’re
shooting for — it’s as high as you can
go”
His junior year at LaGrange,
Grobe and his teammates went to
regional before getting beaten out
by Jasper.
His senior year, 1973, brought a
new coach to LaGrange and, “We
knew we had the team to win state,”
he said.
“He was a young man and didn’t
know much about baseball because
they didn’t have much of a program
where he came from. But, we won
state that year. We’re about 30
miles from Brenham and we ended
up playing them for the state cham
pionship.”
ally batted lead-off or second (in the
lineup). And I’ve always been
taught that it was the lead-off man’s
responsibility to get on base. I look
for the walks."

LaGrange had already beat Pecos
and Brenham had eliminated South
Grand Prairie to set the neighboring
towns for the 3-1 LaGrange win.
“I really first saw Buddy play in
high school,” Aggie coach Tom
Chandler said. “I felt like he’d play
some good college ball. He went to
Temple (Junior College) and when
they played here (in playoffs) Coach
Simpson and I saw him play and de
cided to offer him a scholarship.”
Grobe will take a .320 batting av
erage into the series with Baylor
this weekend, weather permitting.
The Aggies will take a 27-9 record
into the 3 p.m. game today. They
are 10-2 in Southwest Conference
play. Baylor is 16-6 and 3-3. The
two will meet for a doubleheader at
1 p.m. Saturday.
Grobe is leading the team in
bases on balls (19) and there is a rea
son for it.
