Page 6 THE BATTALION FRIDAY, MARCH 25, 1977 Grobe leads Ags against Bears By STEVE MARTAINDALE Buddy Grobe in his fourth year of college baseball, has participated in the National Collegiate Athletic Association playoffs and has spent two years as a leader at Texas A&M. But the highest point of his baseball career was in high school. In 1973, Grobe and his team mates at LaGrange High School won the Texas state championship for Class AAA schools. “That would have to be the high point of my baseball career,” the moustached second baseman said. “I’ve had some good times playing college baseball. But, I’d rank win ning state with winning the College World Series. That’s what you’re shooting for — it’s as high as you can go” His junior year at LaGrange, Grobe and his teammates went to regional before getting beaten out by Jasper. His senior year, 1973, brought a new coach to LaGrange and, “We knew we had the team to win state,” he said. “He was a young man and didn’t know much about baseball because they didn’t have much of a program where he came from. But, we won state that year. We’re about 30 miles from Brenham and we ended up playing them for the state cham pionship.” ally batted lead-off or second (in the lineup). He went to Temple (Junior College) and when they played here (in playoffs) Coach Simpson and I saw him play and de cided to offer him a scholarship.” Grobe will take a .320 batting av erage into the series with Baylor this weekend, weather permitting. The Aggies will take a 27-9 record into the 3 p.m. game today. They are 10-2 in Southwest Conference play. Baylor is 16-6 and 3-3. The two will meet for a doubleheader at 1 p.m. Saturday.
