Brazos County
A&M club gets
appointed officer
John A. Adams has been ap
pointed activities vice president of
the Brazos County A&M Club.
Adams is a former staff assistant to
the commandant at Texas A&M
University.
He succeeds the recently-elected
Mike Goeken, who accepted new
employment. Club President Malon
Southerland said Adams’ appoint
ment was approved by the board of
directors. The new activities vice
president works for Meiller Re
search Inc.
Next Tuesday’s meeting, at the
Texas A&M party quonset hut, will
feature Adams former boss, Col.
Thomas R. Parsons. The comman
dant and professor of military sci
ence will speak on some of the
lighter moments of his six years in
the Trigon.
Socializing begins at 6:30 p.m.
and dinner is at 7:30 p.m. Reser

STICKERS for state vehicle
registration can be purchased
Monday through Friday, Mar.
28-Apr. 1, 8-11:30 a.m. and
12:30-4:15 p.m. outside the
Memorial Student Center post
office. Prices for registration will
vary with the weight of the car.
The deadline for registration is
midnight Apr. 1, with late regis
trations fined 10 per cent of the
sticker cost. Replacement cost of
a sticker is $1.30. Only local
checks and cash will be accepted
for payment.
MITCHEL YOUNG EVANS,

AN OUTBREAK of red and
German measles that began be
fore Christmas in Houston now
totals more than 380 cases, in a
second big wave of the epidemic.
Red measles can cause mental
retardation in complicated cases,
and German measles in pregnant
women can cause fetal defects.

John Hill returned yesterday
from Mexico with a list of crimes
Mexican officials need help in
investigating. At the top of the
list is finding a Matamoros
policeman who extorted $14,000
from an American. While in
Mexico, Hill visited four young
American women who have been
held in a mexican jail for three
years, convicted of bringing
cocaine into Mexico. Hill said
they should be brought home
because they had been punished
enough due to emotional experi
ences.
AN AUDIT of the Howard
Hughes estate has been started
by the Texas Comptroller’s Of
fice. The state wants to collect
taxes on the estate, and Comp
troller Bob Bullock said he had
assigned more than a dozen staff
members to the task he de
scribed as “such a big job it s al
most like creating another divi
sion.”
VELSICOL, a chemical cor
poration in Houston where 10
pesticide workers suffered nerve
damage that prompted a federal
investigation, has been cited for
leaking chemicals into nearby
ditches. The Environmental Pro
tection Agency citation issued
yesterday gives the company 90
days to correct the problem or
face possible court action. Inves
tigators said the nerve-attacking
pesticides were washing out of
the suburban Bayport plant into
surface water.

COLLEGE COSTS will be
pushed up eight per cent by in
flation, heating and salary costs
by September — giving parents
the biggest college bills in his
tory. Authorities estimate $100
of every bill is to cover the cost of
complying with paper work re
quired by the Federal govern
ment. State-supported schools
on the average billed resident
students $1,797 for tuition, room
and board last year; non-resident
ones, $2,680.
ROMAN POLANSKI, 43, was
indicted yesterday on six counts
of drugging and raping a 13-
year-old girl at actor Jack Nichol
son’s house in Los Angeles. The
indictment, made by the County
Grand Jury, could send the di
rector of “Rosemary’s Baby” and
other macabre movies to prison
for 50 years.
A 16-YEAR CHILL in rela
tions between Cuba and the
United States appears to be
warming a bit with the disclosure
yesterday that direct U.S.
negotiations with Fidel Castro’s
regime are going on in New
York. The talks, involving
offshore fishing limits, are the
second Carter gesture toward
Cuba in less than a week. On
March 18, Carter ended the 16-
year travel ban for Americans
going to Cuba, Cambodia,
Vietnam and North Korea.
