Last year, she put away 15. The runnerup, Glenn Tarrant of Bath, Mich., quit midway through his seventh banana split. The contest lasted for 90 minutes. Miss .Querth, 5-foot-10 and 135 pounds, consumed 156.2 ounces of ice cream alone. Each banana split consisted of three scoops of ice cream, one ounce of chocolate syrup, two dabs of whipped cream, chopped nuts, a maraschino cherry and one whole banana. Texas PARKS and Wildlife officials have requested Blanco County commissioners to close three miles of the Pedernales River to swimming because eight persons have drowned in the Pedernales Falls State Park since May of 1975. TWENTY-THREE new dis trict courts have been created by a bill that will become effective April 1. Gov. Dolph Briscoe signed the bill into effect, and earlier declared the legislation was an emergency measure to speed legislative consideration and approval. EXXON Co. USA asked the Texas Railroad Commission yes terday for permission to surface mine uranium ore. A hearing set for March 21 is the first the commission has conducted on a request for a uranium ore strip mining permit. Exxon plans to begin open pitmining operations in late 1977, with an estimated 200,000 tons of ore produced a year from the 61-acre site three miles from Oakville and about five miles from Three Rivers. National BY DRINKING up to four gal lons of water daily, 29-year-old Tina Christopherson of Miami killed herself, perhaps the first such fatality ever recorded, med ical authorities report. The death was listed as “probable suicide,” the victim dying from “water in toxication.” Doctors said the woman upset her body chemis try by the obsessive water drinking. Her tissues, particu larly her lungs, swelled and a heart rhythm disturbance began. A STUDY to avoid placing heavy reliance on plutonium as a power plant fuel was begun by the government, possibly even tually switching atomic power plants to a different fuel to re duce nuclear proliferation risks, a federal arms control specialist reported today. The new fuel possibly would use thorium mixed with uranium. Plutonium economy would greatly magnify the threat of plutonium diversion to atomic weapons around the world, for plutonium is the stuff from which bombs are made. A FREIGHTER with flam mable cargo and live ammunition aboard rescued all but one of the 39 crewmen aboard a leaking oil tanker which exploded in the Pacific, 360 miles west of Hon olulu last night. Five million of its 30-million gallons of oil, stretch ing across 50 miles, was ignited when the tanker exploded. A $4 BILLION House bill for local public works projects across the country was passed 295-85 . The bill, part of President Car ter’s economic stimulus package, would create 600,000 jobs. World PRESIDENT Idi Amin, in apparent retaliation for critical U.S. reaction to recent events in Uganda, today barred an esti mated 200 American residents from leaving the country and or dered them to meet with him next week. In a statement broad cast by Uganda Radio Amin said Americans in Uganda were free to stay provided they “do not work for Zionist Israel.” Immi gration officers at border posts and airports were instructed not to allow Americans to leave the country.
