The saddest are, "It might have been," More sad are these we daily see: "It is, but had n’t ought to be." —Bret Harte “I think it was the hardest played basketball game I’ve ever seen in the SWC,” coach Shelby Metcalf said. “They keep trying to keep us down, but nobody can do it.” By PAUL ARNETT Battalion Sports Editor Grant Dukes had a bad night against the Aggies the first time the teams met this year scoring only four points. But two of these points came on a 15 foot jump shot with four seconds remaining in the game that eventually led Texas Tech to a 66-64 victory. The Aggies had led throughout the ball game, but questionable calls by the officials changed the complexion of things. Dukes seems to thrive on pres sure sinking two free throws with six seconds left on the clock as Texas Tech once, again defeated Texas A&M 60-59. A&M was ahead by five points with four minutes remaining in the game when the officials decided to even things up. As Keith Kitchens was hitting a 20 foot jumper from the circle, the referee’s whistle sounded and a foul was assesed against Keith Carter. Mike Russel went to the foul line, calmly drop ped in each free throw and suddenly the score was 52-51. Willie Foreman answered this threat with a lay-up giving the Ags a three point lead. This was no sooner done when Geoff Houston hit on a driving lay-up knocking Foreman to the floor. The apparent charge was called a blocking foul on Foreman sending Houston to the line. He completed the three point play and tied the score at 54. Tech eventually took the lead (58-57) with 42 seconds remaining in the game. The Ags called time out with 18 seconds left on the clock in order to set up a play. Sylestine got open under the basket following the time out, but lost the ball out of bounds as he was going up for the shot. Red Raider coach Gerald Meyers reflected back on that play with Metcalf after the final buzzer sounded. “Coach we were all over his back,” Meyers said. “I hate to take this one away from you.’’ Despite the bad officiating the Aggies looked good. Carter had his best game as an college transfer had four Mman sw shots, eight points and '' bounds. n By < ThffcVhat wi ath am Id be tl Foreman was the leadin. for the Ags scoring 22 poi^ the first game he started* Aggie. House Bill 826, introduced by State Representative Fred Head, would allow hunters who use single shot muzzle-loading rifles to hunt deer and turkey for two weeks each year before regular season opens. Currently, Texas has no special season for muzzle-loaders, so hunt ers must go to other states for deer and turkey hunting before the regu lar season opens. The proposed sea son would give black-powder enthusiasts a chance to bag a deer before the woods are crowded with hunters using more modem rifles. The bill also specifies that hunters may not use scopes on their rifles during the special season, and violators may be fined up to $200. A muzzle-loading firearm is defined as “a single shot firearm loaded from the muzzle, using black powder as a propellant, and having a bore size of not smaller than .40 caliber.” If this bill becomes law, it will not affect any special archery seasons which exist in some counties. The black-powder season would run concurrently with the special archery season. On Feb. 19 and 20, the Aggie Bass Club will hold a draw tourna ment on Lake Conroe. Contestants will fish both Saturday and Sunday, with a ten-fish limit each day. The Conroe tournament will be of interest to people who don’t own boats, because everyone who shows up for the draw at the next club meeting will have a chance to fish. Boat owners will be paired with members who do not have boats, unless there are more boaters than non-boaters present. Members who do not have boats but have been fishing club tourna ments for the past year will draw first for positions, and any additional openings will be given to newcom ers. If you are planning to fish this tournament, you must be present at the meeting for the draw. The meet ing will be Tuesday, Feb. 15 in room 401 of Rudder Tower. Starting time is 7:30 p.m., and door prizes will be given. Speaker for the meeting will be the state representative for “Pro- Bass Magazine,” Lewis Sagmiller. It should be an interesting evening, whether you plan to join the club or not. Triumph of the Will I I Battalion photo by PiABIwney Steve Jones (No. 33) drives around Mike Edwards forlAW easy lay-up.
