The fraternity will be barred from in tramural athletics and denied use of university facilities until Aug. 1, 1977. Texas A FURTHER study to determine how much smog can be reduced by strict controls on automobile use was called yesterday by Lloyd Bentsen, D-Tex., after noting find ings of air pollution on mountain tops and at sea. Bentsen introduced a bill to create a National Air Qual ity Commission to study the link be tween smog and hydrocarbon emis sions from automobiles, refineries and petrochemical plants. WHEN 200 students, or 20 per cent of the enrollment, were absent in Plains Wednesday because of the flu-like epidemic, school officials suspended the district’s classes until Monday. State health officials yes terday planned surveillance of the epidemic. “The doctor told us if we closed the schools, he thought he could get it under control by Monday,” Superintendent Roy Dodds said. AN INCREASE in freight rates by 4 per cent proposed by the Texas Railroad Commission will be re viewed in a March 21 hearing. A SCHOOL finance bill, totaling $990 million, was introduced by Sen. Grant Jones, D-Abilene, and Rep. Hamp Atkinson, D-New Bos ton. The bill is favored by the Texas School Administrators Council, and compares with Gov. Dolph Bris coe’s plan to increase state spending on public schools $850 million, and a proposal by the Texas State Teachers Association to boost spending $1.48 billion. SAN ANTONIO police and fire men say they are entitled to more money and are trying to get a law repealed which requires the city to make unlimited lump sum pay ments of accumulated sick leave to policemen and firemen. Represen tatives of the two sides addressed a legislative committee yesterday on the issue. National GREEDY STOCK speculation has caused exorbitant coffee prices, according to Costa Rican President Daniel Oduber, who said he will propose to President Carter an agreement to limit price increases. The price control plan was suggested yesterday at a meeting of the Second Annual Central Ameri can Conference in New Orleans. THE AMERICAN Civil Liber ties Union (ACLU) will defend Miles Arber, editor of the Crested Butte Chronicle, sued for libel be cause of stories he wrote about al leged misuse of influence by former Army Secretary Howard “Bo” Cal laway. A spokesman for ACLU said the question is essentially a free speech problem and that Mr. Cal laway is a public figure and was at tacked for what Arber felt was im proper activity in the influence of his job. TENSION between Henry Gon zalez, D-Tex., chairman of the House assassinations committee, and the committee’s rebellious members, left the panel embroiled today over Richard Sprague, chief counsel of the committee. Gonzales said he was firing the controversial Philadelphia prosecutor “because of a consistent attempt to undermine my chairmanship and malign me personally” with the staff. But all 11 committee members spurned his decision, declared the firing to be illegal, and told Sprague to hold fast. Gonzales said if problems aren’t resolved, he will terminate the panel’s life March 31, the date the House set for the panel to justify itself. THE MOST severe drought in recent history in Colorado prompted Gov. Richard Lamm yes terday to urge residents of the state to cut back their water consumption by at least 10 per cent. He said Col oradans should take showers instead of baths, which would save a family 15,000 gallons per year, and should drop a brick into toilet tanks to save another 5,000 gallons. A PROPOSAL to honor U.N. Ambassador Andrew Young has been rejected by an organization promoting international trade and understanding because one board member said Young is unfit for pub lic office. Members of the Interna tional House board of directors voted to withdraw the invitation. There IS a difference!!!
